Peterborough hauliers

Spanners have operated some of the most impressive mixers around.
Here’s a small selection from over the years…

Here’s another one, from their own website.

Nice Foden of Cade Brothers, Ramsey.
Looks like it’s just about to be delivered.

Here’s an even older one from Cades.

Reference Mitchell Engineering… Was one of two subsequently unconnected Peterborough companies, who’s speciality was power station boilers and coal handling plant, overhead power lines and the like, with worldwide operations, and hence the London head office. Their yard was in Glebe Road, adjacent to the football ground. The other was Mitchell Construction, who were one of the largest civil engineering contractors in the UK at that time (1960/70’s), with offices in Oundle Road, now the university building. They had a plant yard over at Fengate, opposite BRS, another at the rear of the Oundle Road office, accessed via Wharf Road, plus London Road, Carmyle, Glasgow, and Gelderd Road, Leeds. There was also a plant hire subsidiary, Anglo Scottish Plant, which hired out their plant, when not in use on current contracts.

Originally, but not latterly I think, there was some connection between the two firms, through the founder of Mitchell Construction, Mr D.D.Morrell, who had a green Bentley ! Doug Purcell was the transport supervisor at Construction, and Mary Bate at Engineering.

Both companies subsequently went into receivership. Engineering was first, different aspects of their work being set up, and sold off, as ME Boilers, ME Mechanical Handling etc. Both traded in Peterborough for a some time thereafter. Construction got into difficulties with a contract to build a hydro-electric power station on the Kariba River,in Africa, which they took on, after unexpectedly not getting the Anchor Steelworks, Scunthorpe project. Mr Morrell wrote a book about it all, ‘‘Endictment’’, which tells the whole story. After receivership, the company was purchased by the Tarmac Group, and the operations in Peterborough ceased.

I’m sat in Lithuania, killing time while I wait for my double-driver to fly in, prior to heading to Moscow.
Anyway, browsing through various sites, I found this photo from the Hotpoint fleet.

Found these today on a Facebook site - “Old lost haulier memories” (Well worth a look at)
I remember Murdens - always smart - green and cream paintwork.

Here’s one from the Lewis fleet, of Mereside. Pity it wasn’t painted in their traditional livery.

PETERBOROUGH 59.jpg

As it’s Peterborough registered, i’d guess it was supplied by PM Trucks at Kings Delph - the area’s Ford dealer.
PM Trucks site was eventually taken over by Murfitts, which later became Norfolk Line.
