Whoops, sorry got the picture this time!
Found this while having a look around.
Sorry it’s only a small picture.
Think it’s the only picture so far of anything from the Hereward Freight fleet. They were quite a big company in their time, but yet another
one that’s now gone. They were based at Market Deeping, near Peterborough.
Any more pictures?

Just been looking at old showman’s lorries forum and there on 1’st page is PHH scammel 639 GEW as a fair waggon
Greetings too all
I am a newbee on here and will introduce myself properly in time, but as a Peterborough
born and bred and still living man, thought i would answer one or two items raised on this thread
First, the AEC shunter that PHH used, was donated to the Peterborough Regiional college motor
vehicles dept,as a fellow trainee and i got it running whilsy we were training. It joined there amongst others,an
ex National carriers Tm3200 (500 engine) and an Ex Hotpoint Daf2100 unit.
I have no idea if its still there!
secondly mention was made of PHH driver George Sansom (a friend of mine,as i knew him in the late 80s early 90s as a driver at PHH) who when Montgomery (maybe thats spelt wrong)
bought the yard, was employed until well after retirement as yard manager
Finally, the PHH workshops still exist, are still used by a leasor for the original purpose, and
are still just the same state as they were 20+ years ago!
hope this is of onterest to someone!

That pic came off their website, i created for them, very basic, but it gets the message across, Darren (guy in drivers seat) is my Mate
I signed up here looking for pictures of any lorries from R&H Lewis Pondersbridge, My Grandad and his two brothers drove for them, Pretty much from when the company started to when they retired.
I’d love any pics as I intend to paint a classic lorry in the same colours as a type of tribute to them
A Short History of Peterborough Heavy Haulage Co. Ltd. - Part 5
The year 1972 brought the replacement of the first of the Atkinsons, when Danny Fry’s SFL123G was replaced by JFL956L, another 6LXB powered Borderer. HFL298L, a 45ton gross (I think) Borderer, with a Gardner 8LXB, replaced Scammell, HFL363E, which was sent up to PHH’s newly opened office at Castleford, West Yorks. The Castleford office was housed in a shop at Station Road, Allerton Bywater, and Chris Walters, who had previously been in the office at Yaxley, was put in charge. West Yorkshire was selected by reason of the lack of established competition in the area at the time, but since there existed a fair amount of local work which obviously could not be supported from Peterborough, then it was necessary to base a vehicle in the vicinity. Local men, driver Malcolm Baker and mate Colin Anderson were recruited to crew 363, and 1n 1974, PHH’s final Atkinson, OFL279M, a ■■■■■■■ 220 powered Borderer was purchased for Castleford, and local man Derek Kneafsy, (nor sure of the correct spelling) was the appointed driver. CPL had previously been invited to try the Volvo marque, and thereafter the F86 was chosen to replace the AEC Mandator fleet, although an F88, GEW856N was operated for a while, but latterly purchased by PHH. One of the company’s larger customers at this time was AB Hire Ltd, initially a subsidiary of Aveling Barford , and based at West Drayton, Middlesex. They operated a large fleet of Aveling SN35 dump trucks, and this being, the peak time of motorway construction in the UK, their services were in great demand. I remember that W&C French had a fleet on hire at both their M4 and M5 contract sites, one group being automatic transmission machines and the other manual, but had decided that they wanted the fleets swapped over ! Those were the days… AB Hire changed the name to Abex Ltd, when they took on the sole UK agency for the marketing of O&K hydruulic excavators, and having to undertake many site demonstrations, wanted a dedicated vehicle to utilise on this operation. The nearly new JFL956L was therefore painted orange, with the Abex logo on the doors, and Danny Fry made many trips to, and from mainly stone quarries in Cornwall over the following months, until they decided to take the work in house. 1973/74 was the start of the change from Atkinson to Volvo, with PEW6M, a left hand drive F89 replacing UEG897H, which was then being driven by George Sansom, Jim Henson having fallen down a dry dock at Pembroke, and breaking a leg. GEW78N was an addition to the fleet, a 3 axle F88 with a new 60ton capacity Crane trailer which was taken over by Jack Lunn, and PEG286M, a 52ton GTW 2 axle unit, with a King 30ton hydraulic neck trailer, with Bill Field as driver. The Viewline UEG897H, the second Borderer purchased, TEG597G, and the last Bedford TK, FEW94D, were all disposed of at this time.
I don’t know anything about these, obviously an auction ,I acquired these pictures and more when w.carter finished.
The pictures above, excluding the final one showing the Foden, are of the auction held ay Yaxley yard in about 1978, subsequent to the demise of Contractors (Peterborough) Ltd as a vehicle operating company. Because of a set of circumstances that arose at that, time, all transport activities were taken over by Peterborough Heavy Haulage, which retained some of the former CPL equipment, the remainder being sold by a firm of auctioeers from Gainsborough. CPL continued to trade as warehousemen, and owners of the property being used by PHH as their operating base. PC Howard happened to have a number of vehicles for disposal at the time, and Laurie Elson, owner of CPL and PHH, agreed to extend the facility of the sale to include them. There may have been some PHH equipment that was coming up for replacement, which was also put under the hammer, as can be seen in a couple of the shots.
.

I’ve been very fortunate to have obtained permission from Mr John Thomas, who many will know from his fantastic restorations, as well as
his involvement with Ken Thomas Ltd, to post a selection of photographs from his own collection of local hauliers.
To start , here’s a couple from the Ken Thomas fleet, taken at their Guyhirn depot.
And here’s a beautiful Foden from the Cade Brothers fleet.
Brand new Dodge of Cyril A. White on display on the Peterborough Engineering stand, most probably at the East of England Show.
Jenson, thanks for posting those pics. Maybe if you have enough, a W. Carter thread could be started. In my many years on here I havent seen a topic about them, just a few pics in the Suffolk Hauliers thread I started years ago and which lurks in here somewhere.
Here’s a few more from the John Thomas collection. It’s well worth taking a look at his Flickr album. (leadfoot2011)
