Peterborough hauliers

Yet another one from Bubbleman’s exceptional collection.
This time it’s from the Mick Thomas fleet.

Isn’t it surprising how many drivers in older photos are wearing a neck-tie!

Sellers & Batty have been mentioned before on this thread. They were the local ERF agents, who became part of the LEX
empire I believe.
Anyway, this picture comes from the Leicester Bygones thread, but ought to be on here too…

Anyone remember Warmington haulage & Bradshaws? Think they were around the Oundle area in the 60’s

Warmington Haulage was Ivor Slaughter, was it not?.
Bradshaws were based at Cotterstock Mill.
There was also Barnwell Transport - Blue & Maroon ERF trucks.

Two more from Bubbleman’s fantastic collection.
Firstly, one of Thory’s.

I’d forgotten about J.C. Woods. Don’t know if they’re still going.

Thanks to Steevo on the Scammell Crusader thread.
Anyone have any other pictures of lorries from the Flecknor fleet?

Not sure, but I used to work with a lad at Murfitts, Mark Woods who I think was one of the sons - his brother Steve worked for B C Wiles for a long while, might even still do?

Yet another one from Bubbleman’s collection.
Where would we be without him?

Im pretty sure that JC Woods have been finished for quite a while.

To be honest, I never realised Sellers & Batty had a transport side. I can only recall them as being truck dealers/servicing agents. What time period would that have been David?

Now, this is going to tax the memory bank.
Ernie Batty (who wholly owned S&B until the 1971 Lex takeover) ran lorries under both the Sellers & Batty name, and also ‘Fletton’s Ltd’ I think it was. The Fletton’s lorries were all ERF’s, and all engaged on local brick transportation. I’ll have to dig deep, but I do have some pics somewhere. We are talking 1950’s / 60’s for Fletton’s, but it was through running these ERF’s that he built a local ERF dealership. Sellers was his uncle as I recall.
The firm was split into Sellers & Batty (Sales) Ltd, which was the dealership, and Sellers & Batty (Transport) Ltd.
Ernie Batty is still going strong well into his 80’s.

As a point of interest, the very first Wilcox welded aluminium tipper body was designed and built by Ray Wilcox (EM Wilcox Ltd, Acland Street, Peterborough) in 1960 at the request of S&B for a lightweight, high payload body on a six wheel ERF KV for thier customer Coote & Warren. At the time general practice was to rivet and bolt alloy bodies, and a welded body was a totally new concept.

Thanks for the information ERF. It’s good to uncover the history behind the name.
Any other history or background on other Peterborough Hauliers would be much appreciated by many, i’m sure.

From Bubbleman’s thread again, but totally on topic…
The ERF loaded with bricks is a Fletton’s lorry, and you can just about make out the text.

Thanks, yet again ERF. Interesting stuff.

Found this today whilst having a rummage.

Odd, isn’t it? You hardly ever see a Jensen, then two come along together!

T FOR TRANSPORT - JENSEN 001.jpg

Following on from Bubbleman’s example, here’s a brief description.
T for Transport were one of two major removal contractors in Peterborough at the time, the other being Reads.
The vans were dark green in colour, not quite British Racing Green, but very close.
Guess there must have been a Jensen dealer in the area, going by my previous post.
