Peterborough hauliers

J&E Kenny have been on here before, but here’s a new one I found on Facebook site ‘Even Older British Trucks’, posted by Roger Aldhouse.

Also from Roger Aldhouse is this shot of Cyril A. White’s DODGE.

I think it says Elliots of Peterborough on the door. Clearly, this Marathon was specc’d for Middle-East work or similar. The pic is currently on ebay. Robert

That reg. number looks familier Robert.
If it’s the Elliots i’m thinking of, they were manufacturers of ‘portakabin’ type buildings. They were based near to the Peterborough United football ground. I think they’re still around, although the last time I saw any evidence, they were known as Elliot-Medway.
Quite what they’d be doing with a truck specced to that level, i’m not too sure, but as you’d appreciate, at the time international transport was booming, and all sorts of goods were sent to all sorts of places.

There were a lot of transport outfits taking Portacabin type office buildings to ME from all over the UK.

It’s the Elliotts of Peterborough, you can see the old power station, and the railway bridge over the Nene in the background.

Cheers Hermit! Robert

Found this on EBay - a company i’d completely forgotten about. Anyone have any info on them?

Reads of Peterborough were the Ford Dealers there as Peterborough Motors and were taken over by T.C. Harrison who trade from Oxney Road.

Sorry Tony, but the Ford dealers were PM Trucks, based at Kings Delph, in the premises that later became Murfitts base.
The Peterborough Motors Group was founded by the Read family, and also included PM Cars and PM Tractors, all dealing in Ford products.
When T.C. Harrison bought the PM Group, Reads of Peterborough was allowed to continue trading under the Reads name, i’m lead to believe as a goodwill gesture from TCH, as Reads was the founding company.

Yes you’re right.George Read was I think a friend of Cuth Harrison which I think is why that happened. When T.C.H. took over Universal Car Co in Derby late 1960 they kept the name going for quite a while.

Didn’t Reads run a couple of Jensens

Not sure how many Jensen’s they ran, but they certainly operated at least one. There’s a photo somewhere on this thread. Although they were primarily Ford users, in later years they also had a Scania - which was bought from an o/d for the international permits, and a Foden that was
acquired from Peter Brotherhoods, who Reads did a lot of work for. I can also remember them trialing a Bedford TM - probably through the TCH connection - but that didn’t stay too long.
Reads of Peterborough was eventually sold, although the current owners still use the name.

Probably as T.C.H.were Bedford dealers in Newark

Tony

Here’s a couple more by Graham Hamey from the Hotpoint fleet.

I was showing my dad these pages today and he was trying to remember the company in whittlesey
Where mid anglia driver training use to run from as when he was doing his class1 in the early eighties

I too trained in a Bedford TM, passing my test in February 1983. I’ve dug out the certificate, and the instructors name looks like ■■ Clifford.

I think dad passed in the june or early july as by the start of the school summer holidays he was driving an a series erf and tandem axle tipper all over the country for john marshall @ wickenbrook suffolk.

Trevor the instructor lived in cambridge and use to park the lorry in cambridge too.

Anyone get towed-in on the back of this?

Been looking through some other sites, and came across this one. It’s a new one on me.

Also found this beauty.
