Just looking at those B and W photos and wondering what happened to K and M and Jeffreys tippers, big outfits in their day. Did K and M go into Midland Storage at Ilkeston? All to do with pits closing I suppose.
my first driving job for peter greggains of maryport ■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■ loaded at wimpey minings potatopot site workington ■■■■■■■ 1988
late 50’s early 60’s Peter Slaters men had “reputation” round these parts. A job requirement for drivers was that “you must have NO fear, the brakes will hold”. Brakes were relined on a nightly basis. To see those lads going down Blackstone Edge, loaded, was frightening to watch. If a man got a week out of a set of bake linings he wasn’t up to the job.

I remember Slaters ran into Stockport Gas Works a lot John but I’m not sure if that’s where that pic was taken.

In one of Bob Tuck’s books it mentions Slaters running to Rochdale Gas Works from Methley Colliery, three loads a day plus two on a saturday. He also mentions that brakes were relined on a monthly basis on some of the AEC eight leggers!
