thank goodness it was bypassed by the time i was driving , but i’ve been down often with my old man in said 8 wheeler fodens . slow and steady all the way down in crawler gear . i remember them stopping on the market place to select crawler to go down terrace road . cheers , dave
just remembered when i drove for ernie stead on the s21 artic running out of brakes down there . got to the royal cottage to start dropping a few gears in readiness and the footbrake was solid , so i hung on until the valves were bouncing and threw it into aberdeen overdrive . it was off the clock by the time i hit the top of the big hill , god knows what the speed was when i got to the bottom . i didn’t put it back in gear until i got to the moss rose .the brakes were there again when i dropped into leek so it must have been some crap in the foot valve that shook loose , it certainly shook me loose . cheers , dave
We were on road resurfacing at the bottom of the ‘Big Dipper’ and I remember an Irish artic coming down that hard that he took the traffic lights and fencing with him despite the lights being on red! He didn’t stop even then. One of Harry Evans trucks came to grief down there killing the driver. Treat it with respect and you were OK, we ran from Tunstead to the Potteries sometimes and we were thankful of the exhaust brake.
Pete.
Hiya any body remember that jug and bucket that Waters had (big J front bit) Phil Sutton said he could
come over the top at 30 mph flick the Talma on 3 and come down full loaded at 30 mph all the way. not bad.
when i was on for Glutton it was over upper Hulme every other night. i,d hold her to the top entrance to
the rock then loose her changing up as i went… off the clock every time through the bottom but with cold
brakes.you might need them at the 3 Horse shoes… that’ll not be happening now a days with this new tackle.
John
Dan- you have email.
I’ll can only make it to the end of the run ROF,i trust you will be the official photographer cos i’m crap with camera,ta,Pete
Give us the route it will be taking please Dan.
Hi John ,winking man A53 into Buxton (via market place I think ) A6 to rising sun junction at hazel grove then down to Macclesfield and in to leek to cheadle finishing at freehay ,breakfast is at 9 am so I would think leaving the winking man at 10 am or there after .

As I said on another thread Dan it is just a shame that it clashes with the Festival of Transport near Friden as some folk would have been there I reckon?
Pete.
I don’t think it was deliberate pete ,I will make the suggestion for next year .

It’s OK, Pete, so am I! But you can’t really go wrong with a digital camera- just keep firing it off then sort the decent ones out after!
I’m planning on catching the convoy somewhere between Macc & Leek, then following it to the end, where I’ll take some more pics if everyone’s not in a hurry to get home for Sunday lunch.
So, here are the shots I managed to get. There was a very nice selection of lorries, some in working condition and some having had restoration carried out. My sincere apologies to anyone whose pride & joy isn’t featured here but I’ve done my best!
Great photos Rof thanks Dan
Pleased to see that Rob (1970 Commer) had a decent driver behind his wheel at last! Some good pics there ROF, plus some old workmates as well, would love to ride ‘shotgun’ on a day out like that in the Sunshine.
Pete.
Thanks for the comments, lads. The weather wasn’t as bad as I was expecting!
If anyone wants to copy the pics off the thread please feel free- I don’t copyright my amateur photography.
As a bonus, on my way home I spotted this in a lay-by at Leekbrook and couldn’t resist a couple of photos.
It’s a Mk11 with Homalloy cab. Mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm nice!
Great pics Casey. Looks a nice turn out of wagons. Keep them coming.
Cheers Dave.
