Those pics are from the days when you took no rocking to sleep at night Dan! Didn’t realise that ‘Pop’ was Frank’s dad, before my time but I have heard his name a lot over the years of course. Thank goodness that someone carried a camera with them back then or all this history would be lost.
Just seen the last pic, that must be Jeff in full flight?
Pete.
Taken when completing land reclamation between Dove Holes & Buxton 1974 i believe.
This was taken in Buxton, demolition of the spa hotel.
that big pipe is still there under the road john , but they must have done a good job of filling it up when the job was done as the road has never moved ….yet . i remember frank snutch carting waste lime from there for years on those old traders .iirc his place was where the natwest bank is in woodley . cheers , dave
Hiya hows this for a blast…David Harber lime spreaders…White Traders with Yellow mud guards used to
see his motors trashing through Leek when i was still at school. sorry no photo’s just images in my head.
John
sad to see the spa hotel demolished , they served a nice pint in the lounge bar when i was young . all the demolition rubble and stonework was carted off to the tip and the council built sheltered housing on the site . several years later i went to a reclaim yard in brighouse for a load of stone to build a retainig wall at the rear , council planners eh !
hindlow quarry was the old ici lime works , still producing lime , but all the stone goes up from tunstead by train . the hope quarry was dowlow lime and stone . cheers dave
give over jim , you’re making me feel very old now , i’ve driven that erf . they had another , same model with an enclosed body with loading hatches, and one with an lk gardner . the other two were 5 potters . my regular mount was the 8 wheeler scammed with the dust body , and stuart handley had an 8 wheeler scammed tanker . i think the regular driver on the erf pictured could have been ( toot ) of royal cottage fame . cheers , dave

Yes there were a few quarries like that! Ben Bennett’s chatter could be good at times, and it could also be a load of wet slop on a bad day! You just had to pick your day ha ha. Ballidon’s was as good as Type 1 most of the time, but more expensive and farmer’s etc liked the cheap stuff…

Yer right there Pete but if you picked your time great stuff. It was good from peakstones just down the road but you had to be under the bin about 5 in the morning to get the good gear
Peakstone, was that the old Beswick lime quarry that Staveley Industries took over?
peakstone took over beswick’s and taylor frith’s quarries .rmc bought peakstone and then sold beswick’s to l’hoist the french company , cemex bought the old taylor frith quarry from rmc . i think that is the correct order but stand to be corrected . cheers , dave
So Peakstone was the trading name for Staveley.

So Peakstone was the trading name for Staveley.
Not certain John, Biesty’s were involved somewhere running under the PEAKSTONE name but Dave will know far more than me about the Buxton area. Funnily enough the quarries further South didn’t change a lot, Ballidon was run by Tilcon for years (now Tarmac/Lafarge of course) and Shining Bank had several owners, Longcliffe kept their name but Ivonbrook changed hands a few times (Ogdens, Bardon, Agg Industries, Camas just in my time) and Dene went from Hoveringham to Tarmac to Tarmac/Lafarge and is now closed, though Slinter mining still quarry from there as they own the land. Each takeover seems to be for the worse though, new owner’s always want to change what has worked well for years!
Pete.
Wasn’t ivonbrook or dowlow Redlands at one time ?
