i recall those days of hulland products , flags loaded against the headboard with one rope across the back . most of brassington must have flagged their back yards with what fell off going up the hill towards longcliffe . cheers , dave

Still going aren’t they Dave? I never heard of Wirksworth Road Transport until tonight, were all their wagons in Hulland livery?

When I started at Ballidon quarry in the 1970’s Chris their lorries were yellow Leyland Reiver tippers, I had the ‘task’ of steam cleaning the cab and body of one when the hopper door stuck open on the tarmac plant and the lorry got buried! I cannot recall when they finished but they were gone by the late 70’s.

Pete.

A bloke named Gibson used to run Gothic Transport from the Spanker inn at Nether Heage, they carried for Hulland Products, but I don’t think this ERF was his though, he ran LAD cabbed Leyland Comets or Dodges. Anyone know who the Gibson was that owned the ERF or where he was from.

Hiya XVT belonged to Jack Gibson from new.he replaced her with a new J reg LV. jack sold XVT to Alan Brown who lived not far from jack
alan replaced XVT with a EX knowles J reg LV selling XVT to Peter Dean. These 3 owners lived just out side of Congleton.
Jack had 2 brothers Ray(who owned a AEC mandator)lived in Congleton and Bill who drove for bailey’s in Macclesfield(driving a Ergo beaver)
all the Gibsons lads run out of Hulland products.when Jack sold XVT to Alan and Peter both driver’s set up on there own and running out of Hulland Products…Xvt then run on the Fairground for a while.

I’am almost certain this was the Very bitter end of XVT.
John

Hiya this is the LV that jack replaced XVT with…the copyright belongs to wilky

the lorry is dirty for jack…one saturday morning jack washed off then sat down while his wife made a cupper, he just passed away
he was’nt 65, he would handall 2 loads of flags off each day and looked really fit for his age.
John

Hiya Alan at the time jack had his lv harrisons had 2 and john smith had one and malcom harrison had one, they was all painted
the same green and red, you did’nt know who you was waving to sometimes as we all knew eachother, sometimes their’d be
three, one after another all running out of Hulland ward. we had loaded trailers so we’d get there at the same time change over
and be gone again. that painting of XVT was made into a christmas card one year, i,ve got one at home.
John

Thanks John, I have seen the painting before and often wondered who the ERF belonged too.

Has anyone got any pictures of lorries from wirksworth to post on here ,there are quite a few of the same Phillips ones about ,are there any of Wirksworth Road Services/Freddie Webster ,Websters Tankers,or any others that anyone would like put on?

This is from an advert for Kays of a Wirksworth Road Transport Dodge, never seen any photos of this firm.

Cheers Fodenfan

A couple of real oldies from the peak district area.

that hill head photo brings the memories back john . the yard was like that when i started there in 1959 , with the addition of the bagging plant and hot mix plant on the left hand end of the main building . my dad drove there through the war , taking tarmac to all the new airfields . when i worked there they still ran a pair of recabbed 1934 8 wheel fodens . one did castleford glass works every day and he was allowed 14 hours for the round trip . good days , but so long ago now , cheers , dave

Hiya…looking at the hadfields foden’s would the body be some kind of early tautliner. well a fitted sheet over that central bar.
also registered together …that would be a spectical then i’d think… also a good order for foden.
John

Interesting to compare the registration numbers of the Hillhead and Hadfield Fodens. I wonder when the respective photos were taken?

RB was used between November 1929 and January 1934 I have a couple of photos of Notts & Derby Traction buses one RB 6611 was registered in 1932
and RB 8954 was registered in 1933

Taken from UK Registrations.

Ive had a look in my old reg book & these two motors would be 1934s, ARBs started September 1934, Regards Larry.

Thanks, chaps. They certainly are fascinating photos. Any more similar ones?

That’s a brilliant shot, matey. Although Blakelow Road still exists, the Dairy, like the old milk float, has long gone. I will ask my former spouse, a Macclesfield-born lass, if she remembers exactly where it was, and whether the firm ran any other motors.
