Hi, Georgie and John,
Sorry, don’t know much about Coopers- I’ve only been in this area for 20 years. The only connection with them was that my stepson started as a trainee mechanic when he left school (must have been around 22 years ago) but quickly moved into the parts industry (cleaner & less aggro!).
Most of my oiler conversions were carried out as a part time hobby, along with four or five mates. In earlier times most of us had been involved in motorsport of one sort or another, until the costs of running a family & home knocked it on the head. One of my cheaper conversions was to replace the Mini badge on my Minivan with a knicked chrome Gardner 150 badge. And yes, I did actually have one idiot asking if it had a diesel under the bonnet!

Apparently this kind of thing went on with Gardner 240 badges also.
Surely not!?!?
Anybody got a Big J?

I remember seeing the Seddon of Joe Cantrell’s as a kid, he was a regular o/d out of Ryan & Somervilles quarry along with another similar Seddon artic, I think the o/d with that was ■■? Turner. Other regulars out of Ryans at the time in the late 60’s were “Ron Puddle” with a yellow 16 tonner ERF LV, and the 2 x “Mason’s” (a father & son from the Burbage area) who each ran pale blue Dodge K1050’s. Another o/d from the Burbage area in the late 60’s was “Geoff Slack” with an all Black D1000 who ran out of Grinn Quarry, does anyone recognise any of these names or know anything of them, how I wish I’d have got photo’s of their lorries at the time.
Does anyone else recall the orange 16 tonner International around in the late 60’s belonging to a place called “Knight’s” from Ashton-U-Lyne.
Or sometime when a wooden weighbridge in Topley Pike was flattened by a run away lorry, it had been left ticking over when the handbrake loosened itself.
Are there still any old drivers around that remember a teenage lad in the Devonshire Hospital which would constantly wave from his bed, to all the drivers as they began the slow climb up Long Hill … I wonder what became of him.
Hi tipit,
I remember the masons; I drove the sons (david) truck for two weeks while he was on holiday
circa 1970, their garage was at bottom of homefield burbage. the international of knights was
from chapel. last time I saw it was at bottom of councellor lane. its body had come off and was
in the road a few yard behind. a chap called terry? downs from little hayfield was the driver
again around 1970. at the time we were shifting muck from princess parkway to jacksons
tip (when we wasn`t in their canteen) what an outfit ,a fleet of thames traders and that IH
Hi Georgie4,
Thanks for the info on “Knight’s” International, I don’t know why I thought it came from Ashton-U-Lyne all these years.
Did Dave Mason run anything else after the K1050, I can only ever remember him and his dad running Dodge’s, but I’d have only been aged around 14 at the time.
Do you recall these running out of Buxton around that time, a royal blue 4 wheel BMC Mastiff with the name “Dave Wren” across the front from Reddish. And “W.F. Wray” from Withington - Manchester with a 4 wheeler Mickey Mouse Foden 2 stroke, a Commer 2 stroke and a 6 wheeler Atki, I think they were 2 tone blue?

Hello old mate,
AE Knights was at chapel where morrisons is now and was run by a fine lady called rita furness . she had a wonderful way with words. She could shut any man up in a slanging match.
Dave mason did have another truck, a brand new mastiff with v8 perky. whilst still new he had a problem
so raised the body and placed a bork of timber under for saftey, down came the body and bent the chassis ,heard nothing of dave or his dad since. As for the others I do vaguely remember them.

They certainly got around back then Dan, I wonder if Don Wayne actually had a windscreen fitted (I was told that he drove several days without one after it broke!). Ian Burford, now there is a name from the past.

Hiya . that was a bad day when Ian crashed his bike…i was told at work of the crash but never took any notice just felt sad for the rider.
them a couple of months later was told it was turf. i missed his send off and all. id been mates of his since the late 60,s i think i was the first to go into Ashbourne with the lads on a jap bike. Ian had a test drive. we went past Prestons garage at 90+ when i told him their was another gear…one thing that what made me mad as i live in wales now and never thought the crash would involve a mate from miles away.
when Ian had that yellow Dodge how many spot lights did he have on the front panel■■? maybe a dozen id think.that was long before the Kelso bars come around i,d think…a good mate never to be forgotten.
John
Some Burf pics to come soon with ex Len Summers K1050 Dodge, A Ballidon outing to Wimbourne Minster with pics at Burford on the way back up the foss
You have told me something now John, I didn’t know that Ian had passed away! I thought that he did window fitting or similar after he packed the wagon in, I think that Mick Yeomans ran the Dodge for a while after Ian sold it and then Mick started carting from Products, possibly still does?
Pete.

on the factory, i was delivering some bitumen in kegs i think…he slipped of his bike on the Newtown to Bulth wells road stacks of bends
for mile after mile… another name from that erea was Andrew Brassington he had a 4 wheeler at the same time if i,am correct.
John
Thinking on John I believe that it was Andrew Brassington’s Dodge that Mick bought and not Ian’s. There were a heck of a lot of four wheeler’s in Ballidon back then, now where did all that work vanish to eh!
Pete.
