PC Angus on tv

just watching the famous PC Angus on motorway cops,
he stops a land rover (with seats not a pick up or van) pulling a trailer with a range rover on, it is more than 3.5t and he asks the driver for his tacho.
now I know the combination is over 3.5t but as the towing vehicle is a car how does that need a tacho?
so if a range rover pulls a huge caravan and the combination is over 3.5t does that mean that it needs a tacho? if so there’s plenty of ■■■■■■ and holiday makers breakinh the law

You only need a tacho if your doing it for a business. Many people run cars up and down the country with Discovery’s and the like

so if you had a really heavy car say a bentley  and was towing a trailer regardless of the load but it all combined was more than 3.5t and you were working for a business you’d need a tacho? :open_mouth:

Anyone on here had a red scania nicked lately ■■?

Hire and reward innit, Lol. I saw a 4x4 last year with a tacho fitted and had to ask on here why.

Big ■■■■:

Yep - like if the tow vehicle was a 3.5 tonne van with a small trailer then unless the journey was “private” the driver would need a tacho.

So any Transit/Sprinter type van (even empty due to Max Design Weight) towing anything (business related) needs a tacho ?

It says ERF not RAF:

No - only if the MAM was over 3500kg

when i was on the drilling rigs we needed tacho’s in our landrovers as the combined weight reached nearly 7t at times & pulling them for hire & reward (buisness) purposes. we didnt have speed limiters though. it depended on the age of that guys landrover wether he needed a tacho or not. he shuda said he just bought it.

a bloke i work with suprised the old bill so much
that when he got the tacho out Mr Plod
ran up the lay up shouting and waving
hes got one hes got one

Found this on another forum I frequent regarding tachos and trailers…

VOSA and Tachographs
There are reports that VOSA are getting stricter with vehicles without tachographs.
If you are using your trailer for business, and the combined gross weight excesses 3500kg, your vehicle will need to be fitted with a tacho.
But there are a few exemptions:-

3) Vehicles not over 7500kg GVW or part of a combination of vehicles not over 7500 kg
combined GVW which is used to carry materials equipment or machinery for the driver’s use in the course of his work within a 50 km radius of base and where driving is not the driver’s main activity.
There are a few more exemptions, these can be found at on the Department Of Transport website on the following PDF file:-
