My wife and two kids are just starting to looking at going over to Canada to live and work. My question is this, I have kids to an ex and I’m still paying maintenance for one of them. Is this going to be a problem as I was told we can’t have any financial ties in the UK?

You can still have ties to wherever you want, many people come over and still keep their house in the UK, at least until they gain PR, I know of many others who send money back for kids/whatever, it hasn’t caused them any problems

^^This^^ It seems you’ve been told a porky!
You will however at some point need a letter from your ex stating that she is aware that you are in Canada & believe it or not, state that she is happy for you to be there in the capacity of being the mother to your kids. Caused me no end of problems when I applied for PR.
