PAUL GEE's PHOTO COLLECTION (Part 1)

“Dorset-Steam” Any idea who operated this F7 seen here heading down Sterte road. No doubt working
on the Holes Bay road.

I reckon the blue X reg F7 belonged to Wool Transport which was something to do with D. J Hedgeman and Portland Plant Hire I believe■■?
“troberts0” Re the blue Volvo F7 that you thought was Wool transport, can confirm you were 100% correct, heres another pic

of the same truck.

New pic arrived yesterday which you can clearly see Wool on the door.
I think Wool Transport had two of those F7s, then again most of the memories are childhood ones so may be a bit sketchy.

on the door. Assume it carried the traction engine “Princess Mary” ?

Dean, that was the name of the truck, he also had an FL7 8 wheeled tipper called Princess of York. Princess Mary always led the Weymouth carnival procession and carried the carnival queen. She normally pulled a low loader trailer, and went through several livery changes, ending up in a maroon with Portland Plant Hire wording on her. She was quite a machine and worked well into the 90’s on heavy haulage with my old mate Dave at the wheel. Most of the trucks carried Hedgeman’s design of a flying Mallard on the side, earning the fleet in the CB days the nickname of The Flying Duck Squad.

Dorset:
Hi Dean
The TM of Saits which I’m sure was brand new at the time was more demonstrating the multi lift skip system. I’m not sure what the first one was Dave had. He had a 6 wheel F86 ex Meon Valley Metals which is pictured somewhere on here STR 96N, the 6 wheel F88 MYG 216P a 1974 Super Mastiff can’t remember the reg,a 6 wheel Guy and 2 8 wheel F7s UKC 402 and 403V which are pictured also.
The 2800 I think came from Furnell,it either rolled or had a smack on the continent and Dave put it back on the road. I went with him in it to Wadebridge to take back the Iron Maiden showman’s engine which he had borrowed whilst he was converting a road loco into a showman’s,he was using it as a pattern. The engine on the back is the Fowler Candy Floss. Another bit of boring info there was a F88 which sold in the Derek Cooper auction which belonged to Dave VHO 103R which sold for about 43k and apparently only had around 60k on the clock,I know for a fact that whilst Dave had it it did Corfe Mullen to Sittingborne and back every day for about 3 years plus what it had done before he got it,think the cable must of been broken for a few years

Great info “Dorset” You certainly know alot about Corbins i use to go there a bit but after you as i dont remember his Guy or
the the F86. He seemed to get rid of the artics and tended to use rigids from what i can remember seeing on the roads in the 80s/90s.
I wondered why he had the DAF ,must have been cheap !!! I can remember his traction engines, must have had about 4 from
memory ? Thats a cracker about the 60,000 kms F88 doing roundtrips to Sittingbourne for 3 years !

One of the drivers was Graham ■■? who drove one of the F88’s.

Heres another pic of Sait’s TM.

Heres the Meon Valley Metals F86.

Heres one of his Volvo F7’s.

Dont have a pic of VHO 103R but here’s OTK 59J.

Hi Dean
Thanks for finding those pictures
Yes Graham Gillingham drove VHO 103R he went on to do continental with Kelvin Holloway, real nice bloke. Did spend a lot of time at Corbins from about 1973-85,only a kid though. I think Deans did quite a lot of the bulk work in the end with the fragmantised scrap,I can remember ings from fordingbridge and CTS from Tamworth doing loads out of there too. Would be nice to have the old days back!! Also some more useless info the F88 OTK 59J was driven by a chap called Jack, can’t remember his surname he left Corbin to go and drive one of EF Phillips Roman skip loaders.
Yes he did have a few engines, the one he converted was called monarch of the road,my job at weekends was to wind the handle on the furnace to heat the rivets for the firebox and boiler,so much noise with the air hammers no wonder I’m partially deaf now!

Hi Dean just to confirm J & W tipper hire were from Sandy lane, Fairoak as stated by RTD, formerly owned by a friend of mine Chris Collins, they worked out of the old sand pit in Sandy lane and an interesting story there after that a mate of us both want the level of a ten acre field to be raised so they worked together, J &W took hundreds of tons of waste in there then capped it off with half decent topsoil, the locals did not like the extra lorry traffic and complained all the time. Now the best bit, my mate who owned the field had some chap approach him in the pub to do some metal detecting with his group, well the tenner a head swayed my mate and so it took place but after three hours one of the group came out and asked my mate if there had ever been a tip there, well he replied I been here 35 years and not to my knowledge so he drove off with his rusty old fork his only treasure he found. My mate gad 250 quid for the pleasure and so ends my tale, Buzzer

PS. every time J&W got fined for overweight the next ten loads were loaded over to pay the fine

I am enjoying your comments about Corbins but never spent anywhere near as much time as you did there, but your comments bring
back alot of memories and also about the other local hauliers, good stuff chap.

Thats the fella Graham Gillingham, really nice bloke. I can remember Dave telling me that he had been upto a large scrap yard in
Liverpool to do a deal. May have been when he bought the second hand fragmentiser cant remember but he left in his Range Rover
and Graham was driving a loaded F88 back. Anyway Dave told me that he got back to Wimborne and said he had been doing 70/80mph
all the way. He said he popped in the weighbridge and was having a cup of tea when 20 minutes later Graham pulled in !!

I think we have had one of Kelvin’s on.

Heres one of Dean’s.

Remember Ings Transport very well from just outside Fordingbridge, but can only remember there DAF 2800’s but we have had a
Marathon and this F86 which i dont remember.

Heres one of CTS ERF’s tipping at Christopher Hill’s main mill on West Quay road and loading out of Corbin’s would have made
perfect sense.Spent hours at this Mill as a kid.

The other company i remember back then that use to load out of there alot was Prior’s with the blue F88’s from Steeple Aston
near Bicester. Used to see them often parked up in the lorry park in Wimborne at night, all now gone.

Heres a couple of E.F.Phillips Roman skip trucks you mentioned.

I image alot of the muck away tippers were over weight back then and if you are running around locally like in Poole/Bournemouth
the chances of being pulled on a weighbridge are very unlikely.
