“Dorset-Steam” Any idea who operated this F7 seen here heading down Sterte road. No doubt working
on the Holes Bay road. Also any ideas on the red Foden below ?

I reckon the blue X reg F7 belonged to Wool Transport which was something to do with D. J Hedgeman and Portland Plant Hire I believe■■?

Reckon your right ,never heard of Wool Transport but very short name on door. Heres a pic of Hedgeman’s mighty F89 seen here
loaded with a Caterpillar Excavator at Fleetsbridge,Poole.Do you know where Hedgeman’s yard was ? Says Bindon Abbey on door
but someone told me it was in Wareham.

Looks like its got a clamshell but that crane should be stowed better than that, would be even higher if it was loaded

I meant to mention that when i posted it,but your right i thought it looked high.

Heres an old advert for The North British Rubber Company from 1956.

Good Morning

A bit of useless information on the North British Rubber Co Ltd, they were an American company who set up in Cast Mills Edinburgh in 1856, they were the original maker of the " Hunter " green wellington , originally made at a factory in Dumfries they also made conveyor belts, golf balls and hot water bottles, after various buy outs, the " Hunter " wellington is still being made today but in China !

Regards

John

Thanks for the comments John ! Not useless information at all i like reading replies like this when i post old adverts, articles etc.
I find some of these old companies very intresting.
You would imagine that they must have made a fortune with the green wellington.

Heres another company that made Conveyors and Cranes that are an intresting company to read about.

I’m sure Hedgeman had a farm between Wool and the Stokeford Inn, I’d say that’s where the Bindon Abbey came from as that looks potentially pre Portland Plant Hire?
Hopefully I’m understanding how to use this site now and below is a photo of Polley’s, from Weymouth, packed up in 86 but we’re involved on the Wareham bypass I believe .

Transcare were distributors for Marks and Spencer, maybe part of Tibbet and Britten or National Carriers but not certain about that. The Sed Atki 300 tanker looks like it carries “Genklene” which was a dry cleaning agent made by ICI.It has a Leeds reg so maybe Tankfreight.

Thanks for the info/comments Chris. Heres one of Tibbet & Britten’s motors.

Thanks for the comments Franky. i take it you were in the Tank Regiment ? Were you based at Bovington Camp our of interest ?
Will pop some Army stuff on over the next few days. I think this is another Abbot.

That one is the Scimitar, a light Recce tank, these would be forward of the heavier Tank Regiments, very fast and nippy. I was in the Royal Artillery, we did use Tanks but they were known as OP Tanks for Observation Post, reporting back targets to the Guns for them to fire on, known as Indirect Fire as the enemy would not be in view of the Guns and Direct Fire the term used when engaging enemy positions Tanks or Armour when they could be seen. The Self Propelled Guns such as the Abbot gave artillery support to Infantry and Armoured units in a Battlegroup. The Guns needed to be Self Propelled basically meaning mechanised as opposed to towed Artillery, to keep up with our Armoured units, these were always used in Germany as part of the NATO defences. Lighter towed artillery tended to be based in the UK and available to be air transported anywhere in the world if needed, hence the Latin motto of the Royal Artillery Ubique, meaning Everywhere. I was based in Germany, Catterick and Aldershot where my unit did a Parachute support role and was involved in the Falklands War although I had left about a year before this but my older Brother who was in the same Regiment went. The 40th Anniversary of that conflict will be in April this year. Franky.

Thanks for the comments Franky, intresting stuff chap. Dont know much about military vehicles but will pop some stuff on.

Heres a Mighty Antar that you will be familiar with. Used to see loads of these going back and forth to Bovington camp when i was
a kid. Now alot of the tanks are moved by contractors vehicles or the Oshkosh. If you are intrested in the Antar theres stuff about
them on pages 273,409 and 437.

I thought Wheelers were from Bridgewater area?

Kings have recently moved into a new purpose built yard in Avonmouth

‘Marky boy’ Foden is Mark Workman. O/d from Bristol area, recently packed up. Note the ‘Stray Cat’ nameplate just above the bumper - that was the name he had on his Foden 4000 unit that he drove for his dad’s company. A really smart and well known lorry on the show circuit back in the late eighties. They were all painted a nice metallic blue with red and gold sign writing… Stray cat was still around not that long ago but I haven’t seen or heard of it for a couple of years so I guess it’s been scrapped or exported now

Hi Dean
Great picture of the Marathon, remember shunting trailers from Holton Heath to Glandels with that, bouncing off the verge which was the only way I managed to get it to go in a straight line.
Basil used to do a fair bit of engineering work at Beacon Hill and Glandel and had the garage at Upton with Nigel Palmer. There is a picture on here of the Foden in wrecker form painted red somewhere but being a new by I’ve not sussed how all this posting works yet!!

Sounds like the Marathon was a pain in the arse to drive ! Glandels are still going which is nice to see. Never seen any
pics of there trucks apart from these two that Mark took. No idea how many they operated ?

Did not know Basil was his garage the one on the LHS between the mini roundabouts and heading towards Upton House ?
Is this the Foden wrecker ?

Hi Dean,
The ERF looks like it would have been previously owned by Massey Brothers/Welco feeds just off jcn 18 M6

Hi Dean
Glandels normally had a couple of artics and a rigid, they had a couple of factories in Scotland one being in Barlinnie jail in Glasgow so the artics would do one week in Scotland then the next local. They also had a factory at Frognall just outside Deeping St James. There is one picture of an early Daf coming away from the docks through Hamworthy (I wish I could search the pictures on here,I need lessons  )
That’s not the foden wrecker unfortunatly it was the actual Beacon Hill motor,I said it was red but thinking it may have been red and white :unamused:

Kenmac are from Flintshire

Hi Dean
The foden is on 418 on trade plates but you will see the reg is the same.
The other Glandel Daf on 20
Eatons AEC on 423 with diamond Don driving, this one and HHA 414L ended up at Beacon Hill for pit wagons.
The orange TM on 262 was Saits of Ferndown,it had a multi lift system on it and I can remember it having the once over by Dave Corbin.
Another LCM Daf on 424

Hedgemans yard was in Wool over the level crossing, turn left towards the Seven Stars and it’s where the car wash is, they also had a yard on Portland which is now Hump and Dump, the land is owned by Barry Crooke.

Anyone know where Edmonds Transport DAF 2800 is based ■■

L8337p.JPG

A bit late replying! Edmonds were in Chickerell Road, by Charlestown Garage, Weymouth.

Thanks for the info on Hedgeman. He operated this Volvo N10 tipper which would have been pretty rare as you never saw many

They had the one. A good friend of mine used to drive for Hedgeman/Portland Plant and he said it used to take the fitter around 4hrs to lift the tipper body off and fit the 5th wheel, then it was ready to go to work as a tractor unit.

I used to work after leaving school for Universal Engineering in the old bus station in Charlestown opposite the garage in the early 60,s but cant remember Edmunds Tpt.I remember the Volvo, I think it was Red.

I think they packed up in the 80’s, big Daf users, red cabs, black chassis, they also had a Bedford TK rigid. They used to run flat trailers, the only name on the cabs was on the headboard. They had a yard next to the garage, which is now a Co-Op, the workshops were there for a long time after they packed up, there’s houses there now
