Hi Dean.
Transcare were distributors for Marks and Spencer, maybe part of Tibbet and Britten or National Carriers but not certain about that. The Sed Atki 300 tanker looks like it carries “Genklene” which was a dry cleaning agent made by ICI.It has a Leeds reg so maybe Tankfreight.

Thanks for the info/comments Chris. Heres one of Tibbet & Britten’s motors.

Hi Dean
Nice lot of pictures, not sure if macbar had a bit of a yard on Nuffield ind estate
Think the Daf may of been on marks and spencer or st Michael (as it was known) contract and probably based at Thatcham.
Don’t think the blue Volvo was one of Eatons for a change unless steam can correct me!

Thanks for the comments “Dorset”. Your spot on about Macbar having a place on the Nuffield Estate found this pic after i posted
that one with the address on the door. Its amazing how many unsignwritten blue tippers were running around the Poole/Bournemouth
area back in the 70s/80s.

Geordielad:
Thanks for the comments Franky. i take it you were in the Tank Regiment ? Were you based at Bovington Camp our of interest ?
Will pop some Army stuff on over the next few days. I think this is another Abbot.

That one is the Scimitar, a light Recce tank, these would be forward of the heavier Tank Regiments, very fast and nippy. I was in the Royal Artillery, we did use Tanks but they were known as OP Tanks for Observation Post, reporting back targets to the Guns for them to fire on, known as Indirect Fire as the enemy would not be in view of the Guns and Direct Fire the term used when engaging enemy positions Tanks or Armour when they could be seen. The Self Propelled Guns such as the Abbot gave artillery support to Infantry and Armoured units in a Battlegroup. The Guns needed to be Self Propelled basically meaning mechanised as opposed to towed Artillery, to keep up with our Armoured units, these were always used in Germany as part of the NATO defences. Lighter towed artillery tended to be based in the UK and available to be air transported anywhere in the world if needed, hence the Latin motto of the Royal Artillery Ubique, meaning Everywhere. I was based in Germany, Catterick and Aldershot where my unit did a Parachute support role and was involved in the Falklands War although I had left about a year before this but my older Brother who was in the same Regiment went. The 40th Anniversary of that conflict will be in April this year. Franky.

Thanks for the comments Franky, intresting stuff chap. Dont know much about military vehicles but will pop some stuff on.

Heres a Mighty Antar that you will be familiar with. Used to see loads of these going back and forth to Bovington camp when i was
a kid. Now alot of the tanks are moved by contractors vehicles or the Oshkosh. If you are intrested in the Antar theres stuff about
them on pages 273,409 and 437.

I made the fuel tanks for Roger on that FH, as pictured on the inside cover of Long Haul Pioneers.
I also made tanks for a 143 that he ran too - I think Ro might have done a trip to the gulf in that one…

Cheers all,

Yes! I did run with one of Rabbit’s FHs; and on another trip I encountered Roger driving (I think) the 143. We were queueing to get into Syria from Turkey.

Hope you’re keeping well Keith

Good Morning

A bit of useless information on the North British Rubber Co Ltd, they were an American company who set up in Cast Mills Edinburgh in 1856, they were the original maker of the " Hunter " green wellington , originally made at a factory in Dumfries they also made conveyor belts, golf balls and hot water bottles, after various buy outs, the " Hunter " wellington is still being made today but in China !

I find some of these old companies very intresting.
You would imagine that they must have made a fortune with the green wellington.

Heres another company that made Conveyors and Cranes that are an intresting company to read about.

GA Shepherd from Marshfield near Chippenham. Now running 4 or 5 artics, all in the dreaded white… A couple of Volvo Fh’s and a couple of Renault T range I think. Geoff Shepherd started the company and it was based in Wick near Bristol. It’s now run by Geoffs nephew, Neill Sheppard, and is based in Andrewws of Marshfields old yard, where I started work in the garage. Neill also now lives in the house my grandmother was born in

Hi Dean, It looks like its a Drinkwater Sabey Volvo as the right colour for them, maybe they sold it to an owner driver, definitely not one of Eatons.

Thanks “steam”, how many tippers did Eatons run roughly ?

Hi Dean, when I worked for Eatons 1984/5 there was my ERF 8 wheeler BJN 56 T, Dons MAN (the chap that always wore a tie) and a 6 wheeler Leyland Reiver with a rock body, that was all they had at that time but they also had about 6 or so rigid crane lorrys for brick work and had three artics which at that time was a DAF 2800, Ford Transcontinental and a day cab Leyland Marathon.

Hi Dean
There is a couple of pictures of the Beacon Hill Foden on here one when Beacon Hill decided to paint everything brown and cream. When they sold the Foden I believe it went to tender and Fred Eaton lost out on it to Basil Hooper who shortened it and turned it into a wrecker. There’s a picture of that too somewhere

Kings Heavy Haulage Volvo from Bristol.

I imagine the ■■■■■■■ powered Foden is operated by a owner driver, anyone recognise it ■■

Hi Dean
Great picture of the Marathon, remember shunting trailers from Holton Heath to Glandels with that, bouncing off the verge which was the only way I managed to get it to go in a straight line.
Basil used to do a fair bit of engineering work at Beacon Hill and Glandel and had the garage at Upton with Nigel Palmer. There is a picture on here of the Foden in wrecker form painted red somewhere but being a new by I’ve not sussed how all this posting works yet!!

Kings heavy haulage being closely followed by one of JF Pearce’s Scanias from Frome. Very big fleet always look smart even though they are quite plain either black or white with a yellow and orange door stripe normally.

A couple more of Bale Group sent to me by a mate of mine Driver John Jackson who drove for them a couple of yrs back
