“Chris Webb” Hi Dean.
Sorry,i don’t know anything about Pace Petroleum.I would say they just bought fuels on the spot market for their filling stations.

Pace Petroleum was founded and run by an interesting chap called Victor Gauntlett. Apart from Pace, he was also instrumental in rescuing Aston Martin in the early 1980s (his son still works there today), he also owned and raced various fine cars (such as Tim Birkin’s blower Bentley_ and flew his own Spitfire.

Thanks for the info / link Chris. Hes was a clever bugger and must have made a forune reading about him.

Afternoon Dean,
The only Mid Developments I know of are from the Stratford on Avon/Evesham area

A+A recycling are from Meriden near Coventry but have a yard at the old testing centre at Garretts Green Birmingham

Coopers Metals head office was Swindon but they had depots nationwide at Smethwick, Gloucester, Sheffield and docks at Sharpness, Newport, Cardiff and Liverpool. They probably had more than the ones I mentioned but can’t think off anymore at the minute, they are now trading under the EMR banner,
Cheer’s Pete

Good stuff Pete, thanks for the comments. Coopers must have run a few motors as we have had fair few on here.

Nice pic Rob of the early F88. Not seen that colour scheme before and a F reg was Aug 67 till July 68. Looks like they must have had several different
colour schemes as this Foden from 1966 was different again.

The Library van still visits rural areas Dean. I remember buying things from the Karrier’s operated by Baylis in Reading, they were a large concern locally with several shops as well as the mobile ones. The vehicle on the second page is parked on Shepherds House Lane off of the A4 London Road, the other side of the GWR rail bridge in the background was Thermalite, Ideal Casements (who ran a large Leyland and BMC fleet) and Earley Power Station all of which have long gone. The bridge had/still has numerous grooves in the roof where the trucks loaded with steel window frames from Ideal Casements wore the brickwork away if the drivers didn’t get dead centre in the arch!

The Scania tipper is ex Ennstone-Breedon I imagine.

Pete.

Mobile libraries still operate around the villages of Bedford Borough Dean,

I believe these old ones were parked at Biggleswade library but could be wrong on that, at one time Bedfordshire county council as it used to be run around 7 mobile libraries with three being parked at Kempston library.

Dean this is Coopers Smethwick yard on Downing Street ,at the start Applebys Scanias :sunglasses: pulling out the new yard and the last bits are from the old yard which had a top and bottom yard where the train would load .

Sounds like that brought back some memories Pete. Years ago you use to get the fella come round with a van with aload of ice in the back selling
fresh fish and the rag and bone man, dont see any of that now. :frowning:

I used to see the library vans out in the village’s around here years ago Pete, but cant remember the last time i saw one. Council probably cut the service.
