Morning Dean.
Knights of Old are still going, saw one tother day in Northallerton,a real old established company.

One from today

They are indeed still around, they have a few. Depots, one in Luton, Kettering , I did a couple of night runs for them a few years ago whilst doing some agency work, it was out of their Kettering depot beside the A14, to far for me to travel on a regular basis though just to drive a lorry, agency had someone let them down so paid my extra to do it.

pete smith:

Glad to hear they are still going Chris ,always liked there motor’s.

tyneside:
Hi Dean
AFAIK Woodhead Bros is owned by Morrisons. They have a large abbatoir at Colne and are the main suppliers of fresh meat to the supermarket chain.
Their livestock buyer was a regular visitor to NE marts, they have quite a few double deck livestock trailers and usually did their own transport.

Tyneside

Thanks for the info “tyneside” can remember seeing Woodhouse motors and they were smart.

vwvanman0:
Tyneside you are correct about morrisons owning woodheads, there is a constant arrival of pigs from a variety of mostly Yorkshire hauliers as well as their own fleet, last week i saw a plain white scania with blue woodhead writing which may signal the end of the livery, time will tell.

Steve

Its a shame so many are white now Steve, much nicer to see the company colours. Mind you not cheap if you are spraying a trailer as well
as the cab.

Anyone recognise the Foden wrecker ■■

It’s from JSM, which was originally, I think, James Street Motors. I thought that were from Bury, but Companies House tells me they were from Stockport. However, the directors’ home addresses are Bury, so perhaps I was right the first time!

They used to pop up at lots of motorway contraflows, parked next to a caravan for the chaps to live in between towing jobs. The business failed in 2012

Thanks for the details Chris. The old Foden is a cracker.

Thanks for the comments Chris. Heres a bit more about the recovery side of the business.

Marvellous, thank you Dean!

Here’s another of the businesses that was merged into Arcade as a part of the evolution of what is now Ontime Automotive:

Midlands Storage (Transport Services) Ltd from 1971. Anyone remember this company ?

I recognise that article, Dean

Midland Storage were a part of TDG and I think they disappeared when TDG started to consolidate and rationalise all the various member companies which they had previously left alone. If I remember rightly, Mr Samuel had also worked at Flowers of York, another TDG business.

One of the motors still survives but I think it’s in a very poor state now - it’s the next number to one of the ones in the article and, presumably, the same spec. Here’s a photo I took of it in the Forest of Dean in 1994.

It later turned up at Kev Dennis first sale in 1997, and the last I heard was that it was near Ross, decaying slowly but surely along with some other Atkis

Some of the lorries my Dad drove in his time at Midlands Storage
The depot is still there under the guise of XPO
It was known as West Hallam Storage up until the early 90s when TDG started to rationalise on their horrid scarab green corporation colours and merge group companies into larger concerns
West Hallam became Pinnacle Storage
I worked out of there when TDG decided to close down it’s Stirlands depot at Willow Road Nottingham in 2002 and moved it’s transport operations to West Hallam where it still ran as the only general haulage company within TDG

Some Flowers of York

I knew a few lads who drove for Midland Storage at Cromford Wharf, Bernard Swain operated from there. My last ‘gaffer’ drove a Foden two stroke tanker for him and the owner always knew when he was setting off down the A6 as he could hear the engine from his house. He soon solved that problem: he parked at the quarry on Cromford Hill instead and went the back way to Derby through Wirksworth, he couldn’t hear it then!

In the latest batch of pics, some 40 to 50 year old negatives have turned up. Paul has spent ages trying to get the best images he can
but obviously there is alot of deteriation in the original negatives. Overall he has done a great job even getting a picture when you
see what he had to work with.

I do a lot of work on Hyva, Multilift & Boughton, In my opinion Boughton is the most reliable and the toughest of these three big boys.
