“I dont know but imagine he had delivered there. When papers dont sell at newsagents etc they are returned.
I wonder if he has a load of old papers that he is taking back to possibly be recycled ■■”
Years ago, when I was working in Paris, I knew a local newsagent who specialised in the foreign press. Every night he would have a whole stack- a whole load filling a 3-axle Citroen CX estate specially constructed for the job by the newspaper distributors-of British papers delivered to him in Paris. They arrived before 6am each day. He actually over-ordered every day and I eventually asked why he did so. As stated above he said the unsold newspapers would be refunded. But, those from Paris did not actually have to be returned, just the title and date off the front page. This guy had his kids cut them off each day to be returned. As you will have realised he ended up with several tons of waste paper to sell every month at no cost to him!
Those blue & orange Scanias of Broughtons (Melksham ) look the business.
The lads on here were right the little scania was D mortimer from Hemel Hempstead , they went into administration july1996 , with quite a large fleet of 100 + vehicles at the time …

We have had a few Atkinson Black Knight 8 wheelers on here.
I expect a few of these will be wrong so will wait for a bollocking of “240gardner”
Looks like a spring has gone looking at the back end ■■
That Atki of W.H Phillips will have all of it’s weight on for certain! Could well be a spring broken, they seemed to be made from case hardened cheddar and ours did well to last more than a month or two without at least one breaking.
Pete.

They didn’t fit that body to run around half empty Pete . A good cure for breaking springs was to make the driver help changing them . On an overloading note , I once saw a coal bodied tk come into Topley Pike and fill the body with hot mix , that was fun , chassis snapped while under the bin .

Hi Dean,
I have really enjoyed reading the Atky specs ! absolutely great Mate thanks ! Those Atkys were before my time although I did run a couple of MK1 units and one rigid which were seconhand but never the less all three were ulta reliable and of course Atkinsons were my favourite UK marque closely followed by ERF ! But I was 23 years old when I bought my first new Borderer a moment in time I will never forget ! Happy days and thanks ! Regards Dennis.

Thanks for the comments Pete. Was the reason for so many broken springs due to the rough terrain in the quarry ?
I can remember seeing a couple of Routeman’s parked up and one of them had a big lump of wood jammed in a broken spring !

Thanks for the comments Dave, that Bedford accident must have been messy !
Talking about trucks being overweight i can remember one of Dave Corbins F88’s loading grain off a ship alongside Poole Quay.
The driver was not used to carrying grain and usually pulled scrap with a tall tipper, like the ones they use today on waste haulage.
Anyway he filled it up and popped along the Quay and on the weighbridge and it weighed 45 tons on 4 axles. !

Glad you liked it Dennis, nice brochure that one. I popped alot of stuff on about the Borderer on page 420 if you never
saw it. Heres another brochure you may like, bit of a bugger to scan as it opens out like a poster rather than a normal

I can remember seeing a couple of Routeman’s parked up and one of them had a big lump of wood jammed in a broken spring !
Not really the quarry Dean, admittedly the Fodens occasionally broke springs before they started using rubber suspension on the rear but the Sed Ak 400’s (Atkinson back end) almost always broke at the spring eyes which were very small in diameter compared to the large Foden eyes. I broke two second axle spring eyes drawing off of our weighbridge and a rear one broke going through the Queensway tunnel on the A38 in Brum. I managed to limp to the tipping point at the council yard in Northfield and two fitters came out from the quarry and changed it. I treated them to a tea at the cafe on Tyburn Road, then when we got back to the quarry they removed it again and refitted it the correct way round! One Sed Ak came in with the front axles out of line so we suspected a broken spring, however when the driver turned the steering we spotted that the chassis frame had broken in half behind the cab and opened up when turning on left lock. The driver said that the steering had felt strange for a day or so…
We had a couple of those Atkinson dumpers at the quarry, six wheeler ones though. They had ■■■■■■■ 220 engines and six speed ZF boxes but were smaller than the Foden dumpers so carried less.
Pete.
