the BDH truck behind the drinkwater tipper was part of the British drug houses fleet, there were two factories in poole dorset, an all bedford fleet during my time as an apprentice at the local Bedford dealership of Selbys garage, on ashley road parkstone, the white and green livery was quite new as the old livery was dark blue and phased out in about 1971 to 73, there was a quite spectacular fire at the poole town centre factory, which is now part of either the RNLI or the car showrooms of Hendy garages, (Westover motors), i know they had other factories or depots around the country, i cannot recall who bought them before closing both sites in poole, it might have been Glaxo smith cline, not sure,

Hi Dean and Kempston.
The RDB Freightlines Leyland is from Birley Vale Sheffield 12.They were taken over years ago by J J Shepherd of Oughtibridge. They did have a depot in Rutherglen Glasgow and one at Stotfold I think but I don’t know if it still applies.
Thanks Chris for the info.

Thats right there were two factories in Poole, one at Broom Road where Paul Gee worked for a while !
The other one was on West Quay Road and like you say where the new RNLI building is, and your right about the fire that
happened on the 21st June 1988. Heres a couple of pics.

The Metalair advert brings back memories, all our tanks on Tilcon were made by them. I used to work near their Wokingham factory in the early seventies, and then when I moved north and later worked for Tilcon I visited their Sutton Bridge works a lot to collect tanks that had been removed from six year old chassis (which were then sold) and reconditioned and fitted to new Fodens. One tank could do three different chassis before it was scrapped. At first the tanks used probes with socks over them, later we had them converted to pad discharge and two Metalair mobile fitters spent several weeks at the quarry converting them. One lad named Steve lived in Cheshire where there were plenty of tanker fleets, the other, Rick who was sadly killed in a RTA, was based near Kings Lynn. Good lads and we had some happy times working with them.
Pete.
Hi Dean, Great pictures of Rank Hovis lorries. My main source of work from 1979
until 1997 was with Rank Hovis, loading at their warehouse at Westhoughton on the
A6, and delivering to bakery shops, wholesalers, hospitals, prisons & catering colleges,
in Lancashire, Cheshire, North & Mid Wales, ■■■■■■■■ & Staffordshire.
I bought these two Ford D Series D1311 curtain siders from Rank Hovis in 1981
Despite being a registered carrier with Rank Hovis, they insisted that all of their names
and signage had to be removed before putting them back on the road, so I rubbed them
down and brush painted them over two weekends. Cheers, Ray Smyth.

Having delivered many times to Westhoughton Ray , I don’t recall what happened to local deliveries from there after the closure . I think the bean counters got there figures confused over the whole reorganisation at the time , it more or less signalled the demise of Rank Hovis .

You cant knock a body outlasting 3 chassis Pete, must have been very well built. Cheap in the long run,bit of a refurb
when being fitted to the next chassis.

Where is the mill they are still operating then “FLOURPOWER” ■■
Its a shame like you say,as when i was a kid tipping at the Southampton mill on the docks was a regular trip.
I believe its now been demolished which i think is a great shame,as i alway’s thought it was an iconic Southampton
building/ landmark.
Hi Dean, Yes, you are correct regarding the D1311 on the Ford lorries. They were 13 tons G.V.W.
The 2 D1311s that I posted earlier were 5200 kg unladen weight, so they could carry 7800kg.
For a 13 tonner they were quite heavy, they were on 10.00 x 20 ten stud wheels, and the bodywork
was by Southfields of Loughborough. In my opinion, Southfields curtainsided bodies were in the same
league as " Tautliners " from Boalloy from Congleton. The lorry curtains on the Ranks Southfields
lorries was much thicker than some others that I have seen since. I have attached a picture of another
ex Rank Hovis Ford D1311 curtainsider which I acquired in 1983, LYK 434P was a little bit lighter in
unladen weight than the previous two, it was on 11.225 wheels and tyres. I happened to have a tin
of " Midnight Blue " paint in the depot, it was ex " Robert Baillie ", hence the appearance of LYK 434P.
Cheers, Ray Smyth.
