Nearly had one ? … :unamused:

What did you get instead then “coomsey”

I was on an R reg Octopus, one of three, all reaching their sell by date n was promised the Leyland. An opencast site opened up n got the start there, I’d been on a Barford dump truck temporary at the quarry so was trained up, 50hr week n roughly third more money,no contest. I spent my last month with them on an old nail of a Marathon, but I liked her. Had R45 , not quite as new as the one in the photo, never went on the road again. Cheers Coomsey

Much more fun aiming that around a quarry “coomsey”

I think the only Aveling Barford we have had on here was this one, which was based on the AEC 690.
Did a bit about these on page 365.

A00140.JPG

There a few other bits and bobs on Aveling barfords if anyone is intrested in them, the search box will take you there.

Heres a nice brochure on the SN 30.

Click on pages twice to read.

Good read there Dean, what sort of designer would think to put a hook in the cab roof to be able to drop the clutch assy ■■!!
Good fun to drive ? I’d say so,power slides on the clay roads was sort of normal, very rare for the haul road to be dry, rain or water bowser put paid to that, the R45 lost it’s power steering once the revs were down so you would be speedway driving with 100t of truck, not for the faint hearted, some new starters couldn’t hack it but it soon became normalish cheers Coomsey

Had one similar to photo, Carribbean cab, they had 7 one of which, the spare, didn’t have a cab, the gaffer got fed up with us moaning about it. Came in one Monday morning n the buga had took the cabs off em all,how to keep your work force happy :unamused:

Here I am happily sitting with a coffee and digestive biccy (other types are available) and then I read about Dana Spicer clutches! :open_mouth: Talk about spoiling a chaps Sunday Dean! Luckily we only had one, in a Sed Ak 300 series, and what a nightmare to adjust the bloody thing. They must have been designed by someone with a grudge against fitters, about an hour spent with a hammer and punch tapping that stupid ring round (and that was after you found out which way you had to rotate it! :unamused: ) whereas a Lipe could be adjusted in minutes.

Pete.

You cant beat a digestive biccy Pete !

Sounds like you had fun with that clutch. :unamused:

Thanks for the pic’s Lawrence. Hard to believe that its 41 years ago since it arrived and won truck of the year the

Hi Kevmac

Keith was the regular driver but he was on holiday when this photo was taken and 5he driver is actually Ken Ritchie who was usually on a tipper. Last time I saw Keith was at my Dads funeral in 2010.

Hi Dean , H and H transport are still going from Gloucester with MAN s now on containers. Cullimores are a large operator too still. Downtown s sold out though a year or two ago.

A great article on the Roadtrain / Marathon Dean i wonder if anyone took up his offer of a free to a good home Marathon . Wasn’t the AEC dumptruck called a LD55?

Kempston:
That 41 years ago bit is unbelievable really isn’t it! They are becoming vintage but just don’t look it.

Whats even worse “Kempston” is that i can now say about something happening 41 years ago !!! :unamused:

Yes that was unusual about the hook for dropping the clutch. I suppose it was a clever idea if you did not have to move
the engine and gearbox ■■? :unamused: Pete will know ?

Its a worry that they let you loose with something like that “coomsey”…

Glad you liked the article Ramone.

With regard to the dump truck below,it was originally an AEC but badged over the years as Thornycroft who AEC owned
back then plus Leyland and Scammell. It was known as the “690” originally then under Leyland the “LD55”.
Will pop some stuff on later about them as have to go out in a bit.

I agree with you, it makes you feel how old you really are, in my head I still feel 20 (unless I’m putting my socks on in the morning  )

Loving the photo from Bournemouth sea front and yes I would love to be there right now, just booked a hotel in Lyme Regis for August, another place I love but you can be sure, covid permitting, I will be down to Bournemouth a couple of times this summer.
