Mark Loader Foden. There was a “Loader” that did grain, dont know if this is the same one ?

John Carr Leyland. Not sure where they were based ■■

Elliott’s Foden.

Looking at the size of the number plate,i would imagine that this was an Italian registered Mercedes ■■

Greenwoods Foden heading to Poole docks to collect a load of Zanussi washing machines no doubt.

Cook DAF. I believe he still owns this motor. Last time i saw him was in Cherbourg, passed his Volvo F16 and ERF with a
■■■■■■■ 525 from memory coming down Cherbourg hill. Took them about an hour to come down the hill as both were
over 100 ton.

“finbarot” The Fodens are going and the Volvo’s are coming.

Anyone recognise the Seddon Atkinson 401. Did they offer that colour scheme on there demonstrators or a very similar
colour from memory ?

Arndale Fuels Seddon Atkinson.I think they had a depot in Poole will ask Paul Gee and see if he can remember.
Were they a nationwide company ■■

DeanB. re 401 demo.

Not sure about the brown scheme above, but my boss bought a 6x2 401 demo in 84, it was two colour white over blue cab with a two colour diamond shape on each door in the white section , comprising of two colured wide stripes making the sloping rectangle, one of the colours was blue i think the other was orange but don’t take that as gospel.
Only in that colour for a few months before it went into the paint shop for fleet colour.

To this day still one of the best tractors i’ve ever been issued with, 14 litre E320 with a different to normal set of injectors slotted in by SA dealer Vee and Inline’s Daventry, i’m pretty sure that upped it to 350 spec because its sister motor bought new couldn’t stay with it, Fuller Roadranger and Rockwell axle geared it for 70mph @ 1100 rpm which produced amazing fuel figures considering the progress that could be made, also had Jake on 4 of the 6 pots because the necessary parts needed for the centre 2 cyls wasn’t available at the time it was fitted, even on 4 cyls the retarding was amazing, better than any exhaust brake since.

I came off an E290 400, apart from the in cab differences they really sharpened up the steering ride and handling, where every 400 i drove had one good steering lock (right) the other lock (left) was hopeless, like trying to turn a supertanker around, the 401 considering it was much longer wheelbase and twin steer into the bargain had an excellent turning circle both ways, steering was precise too.

One poor feature was the air dump valve for the second steer (my first with with an air ride axle), to take weight off that axle you had to hold down a heavily sprung push button valve which when released reinflated the air bags, very awkward doing this for extended periods off road cos it wasn’t exactly close to the driver, also the two flat spring like bars each side which located that second steer (forgive my lack of technical terms here) the bends at each end folded over the bush would splay over rough ground (bulker tipping) leading to loose bushes, sorted by our mechanic welding said ends up which cured the problem permanently.
Course this was the Brit maker’s first foray into twin steers taking advtantage of the much cheaper VED for 6 axles @ 38tons at the time, as i recall at the time wasn’t a 4x2 tractor running @ 38 tons paying around £3200 a year but if 6 axles something like £1000 or 1500? The axle didn’t raise off the ground fully even when empty, though can’t say as the vehicle displayed the horrid handling some current 6x2’s display if the axle is automatically down lightly loaded, but then most of the current fleet motors the center mid lift doesn’t steer…apparently thats progress?

Other than those minor criticisms 401 was a very fine working vehicle all round.

We have had plenty of Seddon Atkinson 401’s on here. They seemed very popular in the big fuel fleets.

Heres a bit for the 401 fans.

Juddian you mentioned Vee &Inline the Atkinson dealer and the one you had with a ■■■■■■■ 320.
