Juddian:
DeanB. re 401 demo.
Not sure about the brown scheme above, but my boss bought a 6x2 401 demo in 84, it was two colour white over blue cab with a two colour diamond shape on each door in the white section , comprising of two colured wide stripes making the sloping rectangle, one of the colours was blue i think the other was orange but don’t take that as gospel.
Only in that colour for a few months before it went into the paint shop for fleet colour.
To this day still one of the best tractors i’ve ever been issued with, 14 litre E320 with a different to normal set of injectors slotted in by SA dealer Vee and Inline’s Daventry, i’m pretty sure that upped it to 350 spec because its sister motor bought new couldn’t stay with it, Fuller Roadranger and Rockwell axle geared it for 70mph @ 1100 rpm which produced amazing fuel figures considering the progress that could be made, also had Jake on 4 of the 6 pots because the necessary parts needed for the centre 2 cyls wasn’t available at the time it was fitted, even on 4 cyls the retarding was amazing, better than any exhaust brake since.
Well that pic certainly brought back some memories Juddian.
Posted a brochure on page 401 about the 401 !

The Merc van with trailer is Itie, the white stripes on the bumper signify it did Euro trans, probably loaded with leather settees. Looks like a RHD aswell.
Re the John Carr lorry, something in the back of my memory(whats left of it) tells me that they were from the Doncaster area, timber merchants maybe ?
Cracking pics as ever Dean
Yeah i thought it was Italian, must admit i never noticed it was RHD ! Thanks for the info on the John Carr motor.

hi Dean
thanks for the Volvo
Nice and comfortable as they are they just don’t look as imposing as an old ,run into the ground ’ Foden
Maybe I’m going through some kind of crisis??
Again!!!
Must admit those old Fodens did have a look about them.
Heres one thats a bit different built for the South African market.

gazsa401:
Anyone recognise the Seddon Atkinson 401. Did they offer that colour scheme on there demonstrators or a very similar
colour from memory ?
Hey up Dean
That colour scheme was the factories for demonstrators at Stirlands we had a Turbo Gardner powered 401 in the same colours
ABA 518Y which came as a long term demo motor
After 3 months it had that much mileage put on it Scott’s ( the local SA dealer ) offered it to Stirlands at a good discount rate
It performed so well they bought many more
Cheers Gary [emoji106]
Thanks for the comments Gary.
Heres an advert of Scott’s.
