PAUL GEE's PHOTO COLLECTION (Part 1)

Hi Dean, Great input as always, which is most appreciated.

P&C Hamilton are still going and I see them reguarly at the A1 Black Cat Roundabout all the time, they must have a few motors on the road.

I remember when there yard was a lay-by just north of Ballantrae on the A77 which would have been about 43 years ago.

Regards Dave.

Wrong Clarks.

Clarks was almost all bulk tippers, with a handful of flats, and maybe 4 or 5 Rolonoffs, livery was British Racing Green, black chassis, usually white bumper and sometimes white grill, usually silver painted wheels, the best painted and best maintained fleet in the area by a country mile.
Not a foreign vehicle there, depending on timeline, Crusaders, Sed Ack 400/401, ERF’s.
Only ever seen one pic of a Clarks motor on these pages, sleeper cabbed Crusader on the motorway with my old mate Worzel at the helm…that particular Crusader had a Ford Tranconti rear axle fitted which resulted in one being able to slip it up into top gear at a cool 75mph

DeanB, i haven’t one single pic of any of the fleets i drove for, and yes now fast approaching retirement its something i know i should have kept a pictoral record of.
Never saw the point when i was younger, even when mobile phones with camera arrived i never thought to take pics, by then the motors just weren’t as interesting as the older tackle i drove, that’s the only excuse i can think of at the moment
Apologies, as i said above only ever seen one pic on this forum of any of Clarks, pity because it was a well presented hard working fleet, some decent sticks worked there and the Clark’s themselves were decent honourable people.

7E. Kidd Transport was established more than 60 years ago to provide haulage services for a number of major manufacturers in the Lancaster area.

3When Ernest Kidd established E. Kidd Transport the work was predominately with local farmers, delivering cattle to markets.
By the end of the 1960’s Kidds were establishing themselves not only in agricultural and milk haulage but also in general haulage.

6Throughout the 1970’s business boomed with Kidds quickly outgrowing their Melling site.
They moved operations to a new purpose built site at the old Lancaster Power Station coal yard just off Caton Road in 1978 where new offices and a new workshop were built.
5
4Still in business today Kidds Transport, as they are now known, run a a modern fleet of Scania trucks,

Thanks for the info and pics Paul. Its nice to see an old company still going after all these years.

Paul has just sent me some more recent ones through and they still seem keen on Scanias.

If Iam correct they had a depot in Calmore Totton Southampton
May even have been ERF dealers for a short while

Yes Curnock they did, they went a fair way off really for that sort of work, Torridge in Devon being the furthest and Manchester. Torridge I used to put them on a night out as the first time we did the job the driver went 30 minutes over his hours so thereafter I gave them other work until lunchtime then they ran down there and parked up for the night then loaded and drove back next day. Manchester was ok in a day.

and if you go back to 1972/3 it was GUY big J’s + gardner 180’s and RR220’s a seddon 32/4 rr220, a commer TS3, i’m pretty sure there was a leyland badger , the 1st GUY big J 6 (aec 505) rollonoff, which used the old bodies off the 24’ bulkers, a couple of proper rollonoff bulk bodies, a rollonoff flatbed to use on bridle and cross steel, and a chaseside shovel he had me driving to northampton and irthlingborough to load the lorries up, that was when i wasn’t in the workshop or the tyre shed or shunting or shovelling. the 1st GUY with a ■■■■■■■ was on an L plate , my dad told harold they were the best engines going , we’d had 2 of them , dont think harold was that keen but peter was. anyway dad hoiked me out of there after about 9 months to work for him and a few months later it was ferrymasters in the traffic office.

Hell fire i remember that Seddon, around '77 was working elsewhere but had run out of hours and log booked it home (Leics Forest or maybe Corley), next morning log booking it back to me 180 Gardnered jalopy i got picked up by a jovial chap in the Seddon with a bulker behind, no sooner had we dropped onto the M1 than we were cruising at a steady 70mph all the way, that was an eye opener to me who couldn’t get much past 50 with a tail wind.

That 505 engined BigJ went on for years.
When the Scammells eventually passed there were only 3 motors in the yard without a ■■■■■■■ lump as i recall, all 6 wheelers with Multilift hookloaders, Leyland engined Constructor best off roader i ever drove, you couldn’t get it stuck, one motorcyclist near Newport Pagnell owes his life to the brakes on that Constructor when he lost control and slid under the front bumper, that Leyland stopped instantly, Alec at the helm, SA 400 with 201 Gardner and SA 300 with International engine, that IH had to be tweaked at N’pton Diesels because 1st gear on the 6 speed box wasn’t low enough for heavy tip work and the engine simply ran out of steam, N’pton Diesels transformed that poor puller in half an hour into a flying machine with stacks of low down torque, Hearns had already had a go and made not a scrap of difference.
The 300 wasn’t the best off road anyway, it had double drive but was basically the same as London Brick motors, designed for light off road not something to rival Fodens on tip work.

They tried a couple of Leylands, one Marathon and one T45, both ■■■■■■■ E290 lumps, cab rust was a problem in those days but they were something else, ride quality on both was abysmal compared to Sed Acks and given the much lower gearing of the Leylands they were heavier on fuel than the really high geared Seds, my SedAck would druise at 70 at 1100 rpm and gave fuel economy that would make new tackle stuffed to the gills with computers blush in embarrassment, after i left for other things noticed more ERFs than anything else, till as you know eventually they shut down.

Was sad to see them close down, they paid well for general in the area and were good polite people to work for, the equipment was maintained to the n’th degree and generally specified to be well on top of the job, just there wasn’t the rate in the corn job any more and with the demise of the boot and shoe trade in this country the leather waste side was dying a death.

yes being on top of a rollonof when it was full of scrap leather and then going up another 6 or 7 levels of hessian sacks full of scrap and in filling as you go wasn’t for the faint hearted , and that guy was like a galleon in gale when it was loaded like that . nearly lost a finger as well , i cut open a bag of scrap and nearly cut my bloody finger off

Yup, the fleshings job was a regular for Hans, a more decent bloke i’ve yet to meet poor sod died only a few months after retiring (no man deserved a long retirement more than him), it was always a standing joke Pete would need to employ 3 drivers to replace him.
I did fleshings a few times when Hans was on holiday, carried a lot of wet bone and wet skins, skins were interesting to tip, you’d have to be ready on the brakes, get up to about 3 rams and nothing moved, get to 3.5 rams and it would all let go in an instant, you’d need to release the brake to make sure the tailboard didn’t get trapped but control the move cos it could shoot you forward at quite a rate.
Bermondsey (Croda?) was great, really sharpened your maneuvering up.
Compared to Chettles the smell was nothing to worry about, though Chetts had its good points, they said you’d never get a tug once they got a lungful of that.

DeanB, yes if you find any pics of Clarks it would be great to see them, obliged to you.
