I loved their livery.Just looked right.I met the late Gordon Pannell. An absolute gentleman.Im pleased that at least their Foden S20 wrecker survives in preservation.
Heres a question for you then Tony.
Which company bought the first Powell Duffryn bodies in this country, and what year ?

atlas man:
I think RDB freight were from Rotherham
Cheers “atlas man”
Did you drive for Atlas Express ?
windrush:
Orpwood’s were from Donisthorpe, big Foden users. I think it was Mick Orpwood who rode speedway for Tamworth?
Regarding ‘accident bonus’ Tilcon operated a similar scheme where if you had twelve months accident free you were ‘rewarded’ with £25 that was then taxed! You had to be there years to get the full £25 though, most drivers only got £20. However if you damaged the truck (bent a mudguard on site etc) you lost part of it. I ALMOST got £20 one year and then a car ran into me when I was stopped in a queue of traffic so a percentage was deducted for that.
Pete.
“ALMOST got £20. one year” Classic that could only happen to you Pete !

Juddian:
“Kempston”
This is some of them, three missing from the photo though, one was based in Stoke on Trent.
Those pics brought back some memories, i collected many loads of scrap steel out of the Bedford yard and tipped down at the big dock near the Sheerness bridge.
Always found Smiths a friendly place, maybe you were there at the time, would have been early 80’s.
Who did you drive for Juddian ■■
