Hi Dean, just to put the record straight that the 23 ton loads of reels from the East Lancs Mill were at 38 ton gvw from 1990 onwards. These particular loads were made up of very large heavy reels and 23 ton was the optimum on the tri axles as an extra reel put the gvw over 38 ton !
As regards the Borderers in previous years we could, on the lightest York SL trailers, scrape just about 21 ton payload. Our lightest R cabbed Scanias 305’s could carry 25 ton on pallets IIRC but in the main our loads were usually 24 ton both on the flat tri’s and also on the Boalloy tri’s. Cheers Dennis.

AAG Distribution are from Launceston Dean.
David
kmills:
A.A.Griggs were originally from Cambridgeshire - Ely iirc.
I remember back in the day they had quite a few depots, Monmouth, Launceston & Sittingbourne being among them. Pretty sure all their work was paper mill related, certainly their Sittingbourne base was in Kemsley Mill.I remember one of our neighbours drove for them in the late 70’s - full loads of paper reels, on a fairly long (I’d be guessing at 34 - 36’ish) single axle trailer, with a Scammell coupling - pulled by a TK Bedford…he was based at Monmouth.
I reckon it was early 90’s that they morphed into AAG Distribution.Btw Dean, this is the first time I’ve posted since you’ve returned- so welcome back, it’s great to see your input again, and it’s very much appreciated.
Cheers, Keith
A A Griggs’ address used to be Coronation Café, Soham: I used to send them confirmation notes for work we subbed to them in the 80s and 90s

Hey Dean ,with the sad news of Mansel Davies ,can we expect to see a few more from you and Paul ? thanx MT
Thanks for the info “MT”. According to Andrew they have applied for a new license and the drivers will be keeping there jobs
which is good news. I was talking to Paul Gee about it and we were glad to see they would be carrying on as it would have been a shame
to see there motors disappear !
As soon as this bloody virus is under control Paul will be back to Wales.

Thanks for the comments Dennis. Intresting that you could get 21 tons payload with the Atki’s. I imagine some of the trailer manufacturers
must have made some very light trailers as i know with certain trucks they could load even more than 21 tons.

I have previously posted some info on the history of the Hunter Octopus GJM 768 which was new in 1960 into the “A” Licenced fleet of J.B. Hudson of Sandside Westmorland. It was the last new motor to join their fleet prior to the death of the owner Mrs. Maggie Bowman ( Daughter of J B Hudson) . I believe that in order to meet Maggie’s Death Duties her Son Raymond sold the haulage business to Athersmith Bros of Barrow-in-Furness. As it turned out the ,then, strict licencing regs prevented Athersmiths from absorbing the 5 motor J B Hudsons fleet into their Barrow based operation so they had to continue operating the JB fleet from Sandside which wasn’t a success so in June 1966 Athersmiths sold the J B Hudson Ltd. business to Davy & Co ( Grange) Ltd who were based in Milnthorpe. Exactly 10 years almost to the day in June 1976 I purchased all of Davys Transport operations which included what was left of J. B. Hudson Ltd which consisted of 3 motors, an Albion 6 wheeler, an ERF 6 wheeler and a Seddon 32/4 unit and trailer.
Cheers Dennis.
