Regarding MFS: as I’ve said before we serviced their Reading based fleet of BMC Lairds in the seventies (they had a lot of problems with wheel shudder on every vehicle which was unusual and took some sorting but which we eventually cured quite easily) and they were all in an orange livery. Chris will know no doubt be able to answer but was it just the larger artics that were in blue?

Pete.

MFS ran in that orange livery until around 1978/79 Pete.I started there in 1979 and most were already in that blue colour. This photo was taken at Ross depot about 1978 showing a 110 and a KM in orange.I never saw the KM,we had one Laird at Maltby that did 0400 tip Chesterfield store regularly and odd times Oswestry which were oss and cart places, like a lot of Littlewoods back door delivery places.
Years later the fleet was in white when we got the chill/frozen work…the brown livery was experimental.
Would that Reading depot be at Woodley? I know they trunked there from Maltby, just before I started?

Off topic Chris , but I hope you and the boss got settled in Thirsk before the lockdown . At least being locked down you will be able to get the new gaff sorted with no escape , hope you are both keeping well .

We got off the Isle of Man on next to last passenger sailing to Heysham Dave, freight only after that. We have no furniture,it’s still in storage in IOM,removals are not classed as essential.I’ve been in touch with BAR and Manx government but there is nothing to be done at the moment. However our son fixed us up with everything we need and we have managed to buy some other gear off the net,so we are coping very well at the moment and keeping well. Thirsk has everything we need,5 minutes walk into town.We are situated just off the A170 Scarborough via Sutton Bank road but can’t smell any hot brakes off wagons that’s come down.
The only thing we can’t get done is new kitchen and bathroom plus some other work, but like I say we are fine as we are, there are a lot of folk worse off than us.
Look after yourself, how are you coping?

Morning Dean.
Don’t know who the Maggie-D belongs to but that’s an MFS Scania 81 artic at the back, probably from our Ross on Wye depot.

I’ve been absent on here for a bit so just to say a warm welcome to Paul and thanks for all the photos.

Chris, recognise the blue Scania ,what does MFS sand for ■■ :unamused:

Morning Dean.

MFS stood for Multiple Fruit Supplies, part of the Glass Glover Distribution Group, and was dedicated to the Littlewoods contract which they had for over 20 years. HQ was Maltby and I worked for them from 1978 until 1994 - by that time Wincanton had taken GGD over and the depot then was host to the Malton Bacon contract, part of Unigate, same as Wincanton.
Paul took a photo of another of their Scania 81s on the M50,probably based at their Ross on Wye depot,75% of deliveries were done overnight,we had keys for the loading bays.
The Transcontinental with drawbar trailer was mine on regular nights.

Thanks for the comments Chris and all the photos, good stuff chap. Nice to see you back !

These came in some pics i bought !

On strict lockdown here Chris , with my lung problems if I catch it it’s curtains . We are short of nowt though , our son and his wife shop for us and leave it in the back porch . They can sit in their car to talk us in the kitchen , so we get a bit of company , plus we are nattering on the phones and iPads . I packed up smoking in Jan after 64 years , better late than never eh . We had a holiday booked for June but that just got refunded , will this virus thing ever end ? Have you got WiFi there or do you have to use your phone ? I’ve been trying to work out if you are an immigrant from IOM or a refugee , either way welcome home Dee dah . Ta ta , Dave

Yes,we got Wifi and a landline set up but no Sky - not that it matters as we have no telly.
Being back in Yorkshire is great,we were always classed as “comeovers” int Isle of Man.
You take care, don’t take any risks pal.

Waters Bros Foden on a bit of general haulage rather than timber. I cant remember that motor, too young !

Just a useless bit of information but if you look carefully at the Massive pipe on the back of this S40 you will see Redland FIBAFLO - it is a fibreglass pipe that was made by Redland Pipes - Branksome Poole - I seem to remember that they won a massive order for them in the Middle East and you would often see their Marathons hauling them to Southampton - the pipes were a strange green colour - I have to say I did not ever see any going to Poole - but this Foden is turning into New Quay Road on the Hamworthy side of Poole Harbour captured perfectly by young Bill (Mark S Bailey) - and young Dean I am not “too young” to remember and thanks for reminding me of that fact!!!

Just found another one of Bill’s photos - this time one of Redlands Marathons with some of the same type of pipes - probably on its way to Southampton

I can just about remember Redlands being there Paul, not sure what year they finished and the shopping outlet place was built. Would imagine
it was late 70’s.

Remember seeing there Marathons about. Looks like they had a mixed fleet and were part of the Redland Group.

Their place in Ringwood is on the Christchurch Road Just South of Ringwood Brewery

I do like the Pergola that they have in their car park - courtesy of Google Maps - the wife says she is not so keen for our garden!!!

They used to be involved in all the major earth moving jobs in the area - here are a couple from the 1970s when they were working on the section between Fleetsbridge and Upton

Oh I would love to tackle another Gardner Dean. I got rid of all my Gardner spanners and injector reamer etc years ago as it’s 38 years since I last rebuilt one, but still have my workshop manual, a pair of 18" adjustables, Mole grips and a couple of hammers which should suffice! It would make a nice change from the Listers/Rustons/Internationals etc I have been tackling lately, just pop one on a pallet and let me at it! One of those 8LXB’s from Guy Big J’s would be a challenge, I never worked on those, and there are around 40 of them residing in a barn somewhere up in ‘Nanny Goat’ land so one wouldn’t be missed.
