Remember them well never run out of their yards big fleet I seem to think. Best job driving Butterley bricks all over the country n nearly always return bricks back to the Midlands. It seemed to me that architects in red brick areas wanted gold coloured houses n gold brick, red .Backload ,if it weren’t Butterley yard , used an old bag to cover headboard although the blue n black motor was a bit of a giveaway .Cheers Dean

I’ll be under the quilt tonight with me torch. Anybody know the yard? There was a lot of them. Pic good firm I worked for out of Desford n Heather
“coomsey” the yard was Ollerton which apparently opened in 1919 !

I’d agree Bassets. That for me is one of the best pics I’ve seen on here. Brings back memories of my year on Mickey mouse, I knew the back end of just about every firm that used the M 1 49mph. Went onto ERF 59mph frightened me until I got the hang of overtaking, warp speed 0Thanks for your comments “coomsey”

It’s a great topic and seems to often be confirming some of my views of the day. That the pace of change in operators moving away from the old obsolete Brit guvnors wagons is often under estimated and what I remember of the motor trade many people rightly doing whatever it took to stay with whatever affordable rwd options they could get.Rather than go for the cheap and nasty fwd BMC’s.On that note I can certainly remember the trade putting and customers offering a premium for those types and other options like the A 40/50/55/60,Cortinas,and the Vauxhall options, many being well over 10 years old, throughout the 1970’s.With the survivors also being respected classics now.
Hi “Carryfast”.
Think you have it spoy on. I remember ****** years ago driving into Southampton “new” docks and seeing a sea of French cars that hammered the british market, they were not good and a lot spent time on thier roof arround the country but caused harm to the british mark, they were called the Renault Dophine, if I have spelt it right. Harvey
Re the Carman’s Transport / Brit European question, they were the same company. In short, the units were painted up as Carman’s and the trailers were Brit European. They have been around for a long time - since the 30’s I think. Main depot / head office was at Scholar Green. During the 70’s they were big operators in Europe & the middle east, with quite a few depots & offices throughout Europe. Still going today. Here on TNUK bestbooties would have most info on them - though I haven’t seen him post for a while.

Almost it’s spelt Dauphine. It was a rear engined heap and I can remember my old Dad getting hold of one for virtually scrap value in around '72.He said when he’d fixed it up he was going to use it to replace his old 1960 Herald that he used a cheap runabout in the day and I said he must be mad. But I reckon he was just having a laugh at my expense and it was then flogged on as usual in the trade after fixing it’s leaking cylinder liners.
He then replaced the Herald with a nice old '65 Triumph 2,000 the following year.I liked it enough to buy myself a '70 Mk2 2.5 a few years later when I started driving.
