Morning Dean,
Caddies first F88 now owned by Matthew Kibble,

Sorry to say I don’t like the way this F88 is painted, far better in a darker colour IMHO but then I don’t own it, and also the metal behind the grill should be of a dark colour, Buzzer

6

Bulmers rare F10 day cab. I dont see the point of buying a day cab ? Surely re sale value is much more with a
sleeper plus the weight saving cant be that much ?

5

Gorpat Saviem taken at Poole docks. I assume Renault bought out Saviem and thats why there was that badge on the front ?
I dont recall seeing badges like that before ! :unamused:

Hi Dean ,some excellent pics , Mornflake oats always a tidy fleet from Crewe
Love the Cadwallader article ,and im sure thier was a owner operator from Raglan who had anex Bulmers F10 hauling out of Llanwern
Mantronic ,you are thinking of Dorstone ,where a Blueline driver was based ,with a couple more at Kington who used to park up by the town hall ,i think thier is a pic of them on the Welsh Border thread ,but will take some finding !! .Blueline regularly backloaded from Gibbons firebricks Dudley ,regards Keith

Cadwalladers F88 NAW 500G must have been recabbed at sometime as it has the later 290 wide plastic grill on. Also was this the first official F88 sold as i am positive i have seen earlier reg F88’S in fact A Stevens had one NVN 885F, picture of it here.

Have to say I agree with you on this Buzzer :stuck_out_tongue:

NAW 500G just has a later grille in the clipping, look at the handle under the windscreen, bet it was moved as it was rotten, its not got the original cab now tho.

Legend has it it was the first but not registered until the G reg came out, there were several F reg ones.

Another one of your excellent mini-projects Dean :sunglasses: - thanks - this time on Cadwallader. Robert

“eurotrans” The Green and white fridge looks like one of mantons from Yorkshire

Yes,I think you are right eurotrans. I remember Manton Transport from Wetherby area well, they subbed for Wincanton at Maltby on the Malton Bacon contract. Then they sort of just disappeared. This is not my photo…

Great pic Chris. Sounds like you answered my question about !

windrush:
Nice to see the Richard Todd article, used to see him a lot where I was brought up and apparently he and his wife had a good relationship with the locals in the Shiplake area and were well liked. He was a Captain in the ‘paras’ during WW2 and was one of the first to land on D Day. He later played the part of John Howard (who was in charge of the glider borne operation) in the film ‘The Longest Day’ and another actor played the part of Richard Todd! :sunglasses: A genuine ‘hero’ of the time.

Pete.

Glad you liked that one Pete, i thought that was an unusual little bit about Richard Todd. I knew he was in the paras and remember him in the film, good stuff !

hello DEAN ,and thank you for the Caddy pictures and clippings ,like the old Atkinsons some had sleeper cab extensions or pigeon lofts as they were known as .
The Seddon artic with sleeper cab was second hand from the Southampton area ,and some thought it to be a converted dust cart ! .Dont know who the former owner was .
NAW 500G famous as the first F88 in this country ,thank you DEAN a very enjoyable read ,Trevor

I thought you might like that Trevor. “converted dust cart” classic.

I think the volvo day cabs of bass Pete were f7s , I ran an ex bass f10 sleeper for about three years , it had a window passenger side in the sleeper area.

Thanks for your comments “chrisv”

Thanks for the great pic “jshepguis” With regard to the first F88 sold its like any truck there are always arguments who had the first model. I agree that the first would
have been F reg as Jim McKelvie who first imported the Volvo started in the beginning of 1967 and started with the F86. He started selling the F88’s later that year i believe
and i have a road test from 1968 where the reporter mentions he drove one in 1967 which would have been an “F” reg after 1st August.

Morning Dean,
Yes you are quite right about residual values re day/sleeper cabs.
I had dealings with Courage brewery in Reading and remember union issues with sleeper cabs and rates of pay.
This could be a reason, but as you say, second hand day cabed units had very poor resale value. Harvey

With regard to Daycab artic lorries, I drove for Connals of Maryhill, Glasgow, in early 1973 for a short period.
Their lorries were on a night trunk operation from Glasgow to Wigan, where they used the Wigan yard and depot
of Robert Baillie of Portsmouth as their changeover site. I drove Volvo`s AUS 240J and YGA 644J on alternate days.
They had daycabs, and were long wheel based G88 or G89, with a power output of about 290 HP, which in those
days was a very powerful motor. The front axle was set forward, and the cab steps to the rear of the axle.
This daycab Scania 110 was a regular visitor to the Wigan site. Pictures courtesy of Eddie Heaton.

I forgot about union issues and rates of pay Harvey, good point. I suppose huge companies like Bulmers that must
make huge profits also dont really worry about re-sale values to be honest, unlike smaller hauliers. :unamused:

Hi Dean, Regarding the NFT Bedford lorry from Kendal, I imagine Dennis would know something about the firm, Regards, Ray.

He may well do Ray.

Yes I do ! N.F.T. stood for Northern Film Transport Ltd. and was a throw back to when they were involved with the collection and delivery of the cans of films to the many Cinemas in the North West when every town had at least one but sometimes two or three “Picture Houses”. This work fizzled out over time and the firm morphed into a carrier operation covering ■■■■■■■■■■■ Westmorland, N. Lancs and the Furness area. They were quite a reasonably sized operation in the 50’s/60’s and into the 70’s. They ran a number of Seddon flats collecting goods from L/pool and Manchester which were then distributed to the many Grocery shops via the TK vans. They also had contracts with the likes of Nestles and Spillers dog foods to distribute throughout the area and they also had a long term contract with Boots the Chemist which involved running a couple of artics like the one in the shot to Nottingham and back every night then the day shift delivered to the Boots shops in our area. Another long term contract they had was the delivery of new Laundry machinery for IBIS Engineers of Kendal throughout the UK.
I’ve got to declare and interest here because in the early 80’s I tried to buy the NFT out as they were going backwards and basically were being run into the ground by their drunken management. My idea was to rev them up as we were able to collect from anywhere in the UK for distribution by their vans. The problem was the actual value of the firm couldn’t match the short term income that the Directors/shareholders were sucking out of the operation. There depot had also become a liability and I would have had to move the operation to Milnthorpe. However, I eventually “walked away” and a few years later Flowers of York bought them out but they got their fingers burned I was told and the firm got wrapped up PDQ !
Hope you find my explanation of interest. Cheers Dennis.

Good stuff Dennis, thanks for the information about that company. I suppose there must have been a fair few firms back in the day doing that sort of job as like
you say every town had a cinema. Sounds like they had a few good contracts with blue chip companies (Boots) until they buggered it up ! :unamused:
