PAUL GEE's PHOTO COLLECTION (Part 1)

nilocekyd:
Good evening all,
#connections
back on page 266 Dean posted an F7 (above) and asked if anyone knew of it, i am fairly positive that it was either owned by or contracted to Byrail Limestone who ran out of Chickenhall Lane in Eastleigh.
As the name suggests Limestone from the Mendips was moved up by rail to Eastleigh and distributed locally, I believe that the Company was part of the Foster Yeoman camp who owned the large Torworks Quarry just outside Frome.
I am aware of at least 2 subbies running out of the Depot in Eastleigh but not in Byrail colours. When the Depot shut the Contractors were put out of work and one of the drivers, Dave ā– ā– , went to join Portsmouth Car Deliveries as a fitter, one of their AEC’s appears on page 279
Whilst he was in the workshops he took an old beat up AEC and worked on it in his spare time, the Manager at the time said if he could get it roadworthy without too much expense he could go back on the road. well he did get it back on the road and had even added a sleeper pod to it. this vehicle appears on another page (sorry number escapes me)
regards
Colin

Good stuff Colin, thanks for the information on those trucks.

That was my first thought on seeing the colour scheme, but I don’t know why it would have such a huge deflector- even their woodchip bulkers weren’t that high.
Hi rof ,they do pull pallets so most probably used on that work cheers John

Thanks for your comments ā€œROFā€,and thanks for the great photos and comments John

Jelliot:
Hi Dean, early 80’s I would assume the biggest hp Euro’s would have been Volvo and Scania. Not sure if they would have been up to 400hp yet on production truck’s, but Australia has always been a proving ground for both of them so there would have been a few bigger than normal figures getting about…As for American iron, the main stay in the south eastern corner would have been the 14 litre derivatives… CAT, Cunnims, Detroit… although a few die hards would have, and still stick to the the old riot on a stick ( The 2 stroke Jimmy ). Most of the above would be ex production at around 290 to 380 hp although the tinkerers would claim to have a higher out put…
Out in the bad land where DIG used to play, Kenworth, Western Star ( White ) and Mack were offering C 16’s with ratings at that time of up to 550 hp, but that was a rare beast outside heavy haulage and road trains… They were expensive to buy run and repair…
1985 I was driving about in a Ford Louisville with a Big Cam ā– ā– ā– ā– ā– ā– ā–  in it… I was told it had been tweaked to 440 hp… but considering that even now I only know of about 4 dynos in Australia that you could get a truck on to… I would imagine that 440 was a bit of a guess… I’d say someone screwed the pump up a bit until it started smoking then wound it back half a turn…

There are always tales of legendary beasts with phenomenal power bestowed upon them… Road Trains that could run for days at a time with drivers high on speed, doing times that were faster than planes… Yet to see them !!!.. Plus the police are pretty thick on the ground as well. I know of High Way patrols that would be 700 k’s from base on a pretty regular basis…
The other thing about running trucks in the 80’s in Australia was that most trailers were still running tube and flap tires… if they got a bit hot and went much over 65 mph they would just blow… any time advantage you got running faster was lost when you had to stop and change 28 tires at a time…
Jeff…

Some intresting comments Jeff.

Whats the worst day you have had in terms of having blow outs out of intrest ?

Thats unbelievable that the High Way patrols would be 700 kms from there base ! :open_mouth:

As an aside to this brilliant thread.Could that be Frankley Services, north bound M5ā– ā– ?
Hi Andrew,
It is Frankley N/B, definitely the Clent Hill in the background and Granada were the original operators, Cheer’s Pete

Thanks for the comments ā€œpete smithā€ and Andrew.

Looks like the Foden is in its later years after being sold on to another owner carrying tubular steel.

Pictured here on the A63 Hessle Road heading West out of Hull Foden 4380 Reg No N726 GLE was new in May 1996.
It was originally owned by Pontrilas Timber whose premises are next to the A465 in Pontrilas Hereford.

Good stuff Paul thanks for confirming that the Foden belonged to Pontrilas Timber and the pic.

Hi Dean I did the Adelaide- Alice Springs shuttle a few time in the mid 80’s. One Easter ( Big holiday here ) I got 4 blow outs on the way up and 3 on the way back, probably put the best part of half a day on the trip…

We were logging out the back of Lake Pedder ( South West Wilderness Tasmania ) Christmas eve and were just finished loading the last one about 10.30 PM… My mate said OK lets get out of here… I just happened to walk the other way round his truck and noticed that he had a flat steer tire on the passenger side… Loads of sharp fflint type rocks in that part of bush, and he had one right through the side wall… He was less than impressed with the situation . We were going to rob a wheel of one of the site trucks, but they were all the wrong stud pattern, so no joy there… It was the best part of a 2 hour drive back to the top of mountain where I knew I could almost get a phone signal, by this time it’s past midnight , and snowing ( Summer time in Tasmania ) … It took a bit of convincing the woman in the call center that I wasn’t hoxing her., but finally got her to send a tire fitter out to the paper mill where I would be unloading… The tire fitter was waiting when I got there and wanted to give me the made up wheel to take back to my old mate… But I persuaded him that he should go with me to site…
10 past 5 on Christmas morning when we got back to the other truck, ( Covered in Snow ) by which time my mate had calmed down considerably… I chucked another load on while they were changing the wheel… We thanked the tire guy for his help and told him he could get away in front of us but he insisted on following us back out the forrest as he had no idea where he was and didn’t want to spend the next 2 weeks last in the forest … Got a bit of overtime for that one…

The police training Academy at Dalby where they train the High Way Patrol have had some very enthusiastic people through their doors. Many years ago they used to fly about in light aero planes and hand out speeding tickets. It wasn’t unusual to see signs at the side of the road " Warning areal surveillance operating in this area " They would land about 2 k’s in front of you on the road and do their stuff, I don’t think it was a very cost efficient way of handing out speeding fines…

Jeff…

Unbelievable stuff Jeff, most of us on here cant relate how vast Australia is ! I imagine that forest
you are talking about was huge if the tyre guy was worried about getting lost.

That must have been a nightmare trip having 7 blow outs. How many spares do those road trains normally carry out
of intrest ?

Hi Dean back in those days we had 2 spares per trailer and were expected to change them ourselves… so 3 trailers = 6 tires …That trip was up to Alice … change trailers ( fresh tires ) then back to Adelaide… If we as much as look at tires now we’ll get sacked…
The Southern Forrest is about half the size of Wales ( or twice as big as Luxemburg ) loads of tracks, and logging trails that eventually just peeter out. or start going one direction, where you think your going the right way, then end up no where you’ve been before… Not one sign post either and only about 2% of it is even on Google… Some of the grading crews that do the roads are in there all week and don’t come out until Friday afternoon… There are quarries and camp sites all over the place if you know where to look… Some of the roads you can be doing 100 kph fully loaded on gravel 10 15 mins at a time other placed it’s 4 k an hour up and down very steep windy banks… getting over " The Gap " is about 1500 meters up and there are mountain ranges and lakes in there as well… If you look at a map of Tasmania it starts about 20 k’s south of Wynyard ( north coast ) comes across in a line to Deloraine ,come south to Bothwell, New Norfolk, Huonville… and everything south and west of that line is forrest… If you know what you’re doing you can go from the north to the south coast using only forrest roads…I know of trucks that work in there that have never been registered or been out the forest…

Thanks for the info on spare tyres. Must have been hard work with the heat in Australia changing them.
