Hello DEAN ,and a double treat !as well as T E Jones ,you have Cyril Forresters F88,almost neighbours they were .
Do you know were the F88 was taken ? ive known one of cyrils drivers for years and that may well be him ,thanks to both you and Paul for some wonderfull pictures ,Trevor

Dean have a feeling that Clapcot’s were based in the tar works at Totton but someone will know for sure, Buzzer

Chris Webb:
Hi Dean,another nice selection,thanks.
The AEC tanker looks like ex petrol company,London C C reg plate, and was just the sort of thing A E Evans ran, except it isn’t one of theirs.

The Volvo with low loader is one of Smiths from Scotter which is on the A159 between Gainsborough and Scunthorpe. I used that road quite a lot when running Staveley - Immingham via Worksop and Retford, just for a change - and to dodge silent checkers in Doncaster if running a bit late…………….

JWQ Transport had a depot in Sheerness I think, but were maybe Swindon based.Ran a lot of rebar IIRC.

And I loaded oranges off P J Poupart once or twice late 60s when on market work.Good loading as a couple of lads helped you.

Going for a lie down now.

Thanks for all the details Chris, very impressive as usual ! To be fair the tanker was a difficult one !

windrush:
JWQ had several depots, Sheerness and Reading were just two of them that spring to mind. They have their own thread on here, ‘Tautliner Terry’ was a regular poster on it.
Pete.

Thanks for the info Pete !

Wasnt thier one in Swindon also / regards Keith

Retired Old ■■■■:
“Buzzer” I reckon you will remember these fruit importers from Southampton.
T.J.Poupart Seddon. I think they also had a depot in Bristol from memory.

Poupart’s had depots in South Wales and Birmingham under their own banner as well as owning several other fruit & veg suppliers around the country. I remember starting out at some unearthly hour to go with my old chap with a load of locally produced veg to their premises in Cardiff.
The highlight of the trip was breakfast at the café near the public toilets in Newport on the return leg, long before the M4 was dreamt about!
In my teenage years I spent a few months delivering for one of their subsidiaries in Hereford, earning minimum wages before “Minimum Wage” was thought about!

:imp:

Good memories “ROF”

240 Gardner:
An earlier Bennett motor:
As I recall, the Interoute name outlived the Bennett operation by many years. If I remember rightly, Bennett sold out to United Transport. I do remember that they had a depot at Coppull too

:imp:

Thanks for the clipping and comments Chris, and thanks for the Atkinson pics.

Lawrence Dunbar:
Thanks for those great shots, Regards Larry.

ERF-NGC-European:
You are right to ask that question, Dean, about why Framptons bought ERF 5MWs rather than 7MWs. My theory is that as they bought RHD moderately-powered units, they were only interested in the sleeper-cabs. The 5MW lower-powered versions were much cheaper so that would have kept the accountant happy! Only my opinion, so open to real knowledge. Robert.

Yes its very strange Robert as i cant ever recall seeing a LHD Framptons truck and they did a hell of alot of
European work. They run alot of DAF 2800s and they were all RHD as well.

MANTRONIC:
“240gardner” Chris one of Thomas Allens DAF’s.

Wonder if it was Pyle based ? MT

Dont know “MANTRONIC”

ArcDaz:

Thank you Dean/Paul.

Morning all,
Cant stand automatics personally, much prefer gears. Some of the early autos were particularly bad Harvey.
Had a MAN and a DAF that would eventually go when pulling off on a roundabout or junction about 30 seconds
after you actually wanted to pull away, poxy crap. The only good one i have driven is the Volvo I shift.

Sorry Dean, The booklet is on “Fuller” transmissions.
All the RT models and the Roadranger were Constant mesh stick changers, well before the semi and full auto’s.
You are far to young to remember such things as rolling a ■■■ in between changes and “had to stop and start again”.
Had to show a young lad (who had a cap with the peek at the back) how to use a 12 speed twin splitter on an ERF one day, all i can say is, he survived only because I am religious.
Harvey

I know Harvey i was just saying that i cant stand autos chap !

Buzzer:
Dean think that could have been one of Clapcotts who pulled black oil out of Fawley, also I think it may be taken in Shirley high street, Southampton and I may have bought sausages in that Baxters butcher shop before I started making my own. Buzzer

Thanks for the name Buzzer and re your later comment i had a look online and Clapcotts did have a yard at
Totton like you said ! You certainly like your sausages chap !

Buzzer:
Dean I have delivered many times to T.J.Pouparts in the old Southampton fruit market which now does not exist any more all that has gon and now has been developed, there are two main fruit wholesalers now who both operate out of Nursling Industrial estate on the western side of town. When you did pouparts it was a one way system in off the high street which was tight for an artic and through the building and out the back end which was also a tight left hander, Buzzer

Thanks for the comments about Pouparts i remember where they were just off the one way system with the gardens
in the middle. Have not been up there for a long time.

newmercman:
Those boys that delivered the bus chassis must have had a screw loose, rain or shine they would be belting up and down the road.

Like you say they would be out in all weather i wondered it was was a well paid job ■■? :unamused:

moomooland:
The driver was called Gunnar Plitts
He was a large Polish fellow who regularly decorated his cab, much to the disapproval of owner Peter Haworth
Here’s another of their Atki’s that he drove.

Thanks for the pic and drivers name Paul.

Heres a clipping about them.

D.H.Jones Hino.

Pretty sure this is another new one. John Boyle Seddon Atkinson bulker.

Nice yard shot of Jameson from Southampton.

Henley Transport ERF in Southampton. Think they were based in Kent somewhere.

hello Dean and Tastrucker…that Forrester shot has reminded my old man that they came to the Abbey on a regular basis hauling in acids etc …in those days they were running Fodens …some being 6x2 artics …awesome stuff as usual Dean …lol …Geraint

I remember seeing that Ford Transcontinental, there was a company from Norfolk that ran similar liveried Fords but that’s all I can say about it.
Is that a W H Malcolm Scania on the trailer?

ford.JPG

Did Brady run Scanias Pete,I can’t remember.I remember seeing them a lot on the A590 when I was running to British Cellophane Barrow and Glaxo Ulverston. It certainly looks like their livery.

Hello again Dean ,and thank you for suppling the map ! we have to say we are not sure why Forresters would be in Dorset ,they did a lot of paint thinners from Ellesmare port to the Ford works naer Southampton that is our only explanation ,but perhaps Caddy 1 might know

John Boyle Transport were from Ramsdell, Hampshire (between Basingstoke and Reading). They were certainly in business back in the 1960’s but under the name ‘Boyle and Ellis’. I’m not sure what happened to Ellis but John Boyle was a farmer and the lorries were used for hauling supplies and produce, for, and from the farm - seed potatoes from Pembrokeshire for growing, potatoes delivered all across England, grain, sugar beet, fertiliser, animal feed and the like. They would also take on transport for other companies, mainly agricultural based but did branch out into general ‘tipper’ work and eventually got bought out by Snooks Transport of Reading. Not sure what happened to Snooks but you certainly don’t see them around anymore.

DEANB:
I reckon “pete359” will like this one.
