PAUL GEE's PHOTO COLLECTION (Part 1)

Chris Webb:
Morning Dean.
That’s a brilliant article about Geoff Gilbert,thanks.
When I was in RAF in Norfolk I had many a lift at night with Lincolnshire market drivers and Stantons were one I remember well.

ERF-NGC-European:
Thanks for taking the trouble to post that epic multi-parter on Geoff Gilbert, Dean! Dunno why, but I hadn’t realised they did Middle-East. Robert

bald:
Dean, thanks for the Geoff Gilbert article .
You just ruined my sunday morning planning, because I could not stop reading it
Some extra flowers hopefully will sort it :sunglasses:

Glad you all enjoyed that article,i think its one of my all time favourites as its a bit different !
I think they only did the one Middle East trip and decided against it Robert.

Dieseldog66:
The Lathams Atki, was moved to Coventry Depot and driven by Alf Fletcher, I believe they had another one with a 180 Gardner driven by Brian Evans

Thanks for your comments Dieseldog66, scroll down and there is a bit about Lathams.

Click on page once or twice to read.

lawrence2765:
I must say I have been following this thread for a while now , its great please keep up the good work as its very much appreciated by a lot of us.
I particularly like the old magazine articles.
does anyone have to the one about Simons and co Leyland Freighter running up from Penzance with isle of scilly daffodils to Preston market ?

When i first read that the only article that i could think of was one featuring a Dennis Oates motor carrying
flowers and sure enough its the one you are after.
Here it is.I scanned it a few years ago but was looking for a Dennis Oates pic to post with it but Paul
never caught one of theres.
Great read if you don’t mind me asking do you have the article from truck magazine about Suttons of Newlyn be Penzance who ran 8 wheel Foden fridges?

I have that magazine somewhere if its the one i am thinking off there are two of there 8 wheelers on the
front cover. I think it may be a truck & driver mag rather than a Truck mag ? If i come across it i will pop
it on Lawrence.

Buzzer:
Hi Dean bit of a delay for breakfast today as I read the Geoff Gilbert piece very interesting too, like Robert I had know idea they did middle east either. Bought an F89 from Geoff in about 1983 and had a Granning tag put on it pulling SCAC trailers out of Portsmouth, had several other F89’s as well from other places good powerful motor in its day and all LHD of course, always a tidy fleet as he and I know it makes a good impression on your customers, cheers Buzzer.

Looks a lovely bit of kit John. Its amazing the stories that these pics and articles jog from peoples memories !

Ray Smyth:
Hi John, Just read your remarks on F89 Volvos. For a short period in the 1970s,
I drove for Connals of Maryhill, Glasgow, at their Wigan depot as a shunter.
Most days involved driving a G89 Volvo with a day cab. Unlike your F89 Volvos,
Connals machines were Right Hand Drive. I don’t know the amount of
horsepower they produced, but they performed well with 20 tons in their
15ft 3in tall Boden van trailers. All 3 pictures are in the Wigan depot yard of
Robert Baillie of Horndean, and courtesy of Eddie Heaton. Robert Baillie
Bedford KM ORV 126H is alongside the depot in picture 2. Regards, Ray Smyth.

Hello Ray,thanks for the pics mate always nice to see. They are G88’s mate and were about 90 bhp less
with the 240 bhp lump where as Buzzers F89 would have been 330 bhp which would have been a flying
machine back in the day.

oiltreader:
Hi lawrence2765, hopefully Dean will have the article for you, fridge pics to be going on with courtesy of Colin Pidoux.Oily

Nice pics thanks for posting Oily !

Hi Dean,
DG Price were from Cross Hands…they were the main haulier out of the Metoy factory in Fforestfach back in the day…ran more Luton Bedford TKs than Artics though.

Regards Mark

I’m sure this AEC ran out of Awco in Swansea ?
Could be Murphy’s of Swansea…someone might reconise it to.

Hi Dean. The GKN Bedford is one of Guest Keen and Nettlefolds,a huge company with sites all over the Midlands and in Sth Wales as well as in Sheffield where they made crankshafts. That one has a Worcestershire reg.
Also the green AEC Marshal has an AO ■■■■■■■■■■ reg plate so maybe Dennis would know the original owner.

1969 saw me doing 3 trips one week two the next from Crewe to London and the South East for at least a year in this wagon, it was my pride and joy.
Originally, it was driven by Ted Chamberlain till he went into the office full time.
I think they still have it, in a pristine condition
Pete

Hi Dean, If you have a proper squint at the Connals G89 Volvos, you will see that the
front wheels are 300mm nearer the front of the lorry, and the cab steps are to the rear
of the front axle. Put 1970s Volvo Trucks into your Google Thingamy, and scroll down
to F89/G89 section. I found this diagram on the Volvo F89 thread. Kind Regards, Ray.

Volvo G89.jpg

Ray.
It would have been a G88 you drove as it is right hand drive. The F89 / G89 were only made in left hand drive due to engine layout configuration where it was impossible to put the steering on the right hand, as the engine i think was tilted slightly.

Great photo of the Whitehead and Dutton Seddon Atkinson…does anyone remember them?
Also nice to see the Keedwell Daf 2800, one of the few companies who’s livery has remained virtually unchanged for over 40 years.

Seddon Atkinson 400 W & D.jpg

Good morning Dean,
While I am not a fan of the American type trucks I dont see any Western Star’s. ( In my opinion they led to the end of ERF ).
Dug this one off the internet to see if anyone has some working shots!!! Harvey

Dieseldog66:
The Lathams Atki, was moved to Coventry Depot and driven by Alf Fletcher, I believe they had another one with a 180 Gardner driven by Brian Evans

I believe the one with the 180 went to Bostock’s of Congleton, and the other had the 240 removed and replaced by a 180 somewhere along the line, together with a flat, and went to Donald Sharples of Darwen. The headboard was set back a couple of feet from the body, as though originally fitted behind the 240.

Stanfield:
240 Gardner I bet that Ken & Ray Walsh of Manchester would relish a chance of saving this it looks just up their street, they always say the rougher they are the better they like them.0

If you’re acquainted with them, then I suspect that an offer for the motor would be welcomed, but they would probably have to be quick.

At the time of the photos in the day they’d have probably been White in the US and Western Star in Canada ? with Western Star then being saved in Canada and eventually ending up under the Freightliner and Daimler empire and White ending up under the Volvo one.
