Hi Dean,My pal Mark Wiltshire bought UPR 908L and restored her,my pic of her is seen with Southways test trailer on its back with its test weights on it,I remember him letting me have a go in it with the trailer on and she pulled like a train and was a lovely drive. He sold it on to finance the rebuilding of a V8 Mandator which he rallies today,Cheers Bubbs,
Morning Dean,
Len Crane also ran a haulage business just off Burnt Tree Island near Dudley, D Series Fords in the same colour as the F88.
Len sold the F88 and replaced it with an F10 which he put a tag axle on as he was very close to the max weight when he had that Fowler crane engine on, Len sadly passed away a 3 or 4 years ago taking with him a vast knowledge of everything steam, well general engineering as well because he won the Duke of Edinburgh’s award for working steam models as well as being a successful grass track rider!

Did the F88 once belong to Hercock Simpson, the 2 tone cab colour scheme seems vaguely familiar?

Hi David,
I’m not sure, Lens haulage motors was in the same colour and I think they preceeded the F88 as I don’t think that did any “haulage” only used for pulling the low loader,

Cheers for the article Dean and with regard to the Carrimore being the first with a car carrying trailer, I think Brockhouse would claim different by at least a couple of years. The photo and caption with the Progressive Carrimore trideck, well they only had the one and it was a suffix E plate, 1966, my first sight of it was at Commercial Vehicle Show at Earls Court the previous year, I thought wow that is some machine, 3 years later I had my ergo Mercury replaced with that Commer unit, different trailer, low gear diff 38mph, bloody noisy, hard work, a very long night, asked for something better, I wasn’t the TMs best mate, that or nothing he said, a few heated words and ta ta.
Oily
Unigate also ran a number of these Scammell tractor units below.
