Hi Dean, Thanks for your interesting comments about Terry Wogan and BBC Radio 2, and also the mention of Ray Moore R.I.P.
Ray Moore was born in Liverpool, and lived in Cherry Lane or Cherry Avenue in the Walton district of the City, no more than
about 100 yards from where little Jamie Bulger was murdered in 1993. Many lorry drivers on Trucknet will know the location,
It is where the East Lancashire Road A580 (Walton Hall Avenue) ends and crosses Queens Drive Ring Road, and passes under the
railway bridge. Early morning starts at 5 a.m. were a regular occurrence for me, and it was at this time that Ray Moore started
his morning programme. A BBC car would pick him up at home at New Cross, London, about 3 a.m., and he usually described
what he had seen on the journey to the studio, partygoers on their way home, many drunkards on the streets, some upright,
some horizontal. Ray was partial to a beer or two, and I believe he smoked about 60 cigarettes a day, so he coughed and wheezed
his way through the programme for the next two and a half hours. When he left school, his first job was in a shipping office near
the Pier Head. He was a “Runner”, cycling up and down the Dock Road delivering ships manifests to vessels that were in the docks.
There were many cafes on the Dock Road, many of them owned by Stan Waters, where Ray would enjoy a Bacon Butty and a large
mug of tea, so Stan Waters got many a mention on Radio 2. God Bless Ray, Rest in Peace. He was my mate. Ray Smyth.

Further to my “Ray Moore” comments above, as a young man, Ray wanted to be an actor, so he joined
Oldham Repertory Theatre Company in the 1960s. Soon after he got some work with Granada Television
in Manchester, mainly doing voiceover links, and occasionally reading the local evening news in front of
camera. I believe that some people higher up in the television world considered that his appearance on
screen was not what was required, but he looked good on Radio. I thought he looked alright.
Despite being from Liverpool, it wasn’t apparent in his voice that he was a Scouser. Sometimes Ray would
recite silly rhymes from when he was a lad, at which time he would slip into a Liverpool accent.

For example…Me father ad a rabbit and he thought it was a duck,
So he put it on the table with its legs cocked up.

Go bless us and save us…said old Mrs Davis,
I didn’t know herrings were fish.

Regards, Ray Smyth.

Hi mark ,we have 1 night out every couple of weeks as when maen Kearne order admixture it keeps me out of the way for 2 days  :sunglasses:

Dean and Daibootsy, you will be pleased to know that the excessive amount of Atki photos has proved to be a most effective antidote to the 88-■■■■. All those who reckon that Atkinsons were the best lorry in the world have either never spent six days a week in the ■■■■ things or have started wearing rose-tinted glasses! “Selective Memory”, as the estranged Mrs Casey used to say!
