Volvo F7 tanker,i was thinking LPG but the initials on the door look like BSC ■■?
Your thinking is correct Dean,it is one of LPG’s Volvos on contract to BSC Chemicals Orgreave,Sheffield,on tar and tar associated products.
I knew most of their Orgreave-based drivers but can’t make out the one in the picture.

Thanks for confirming Chris !

oiltreader:
Cracking shot that is Dieseldog66, Luton depot wagon, he’s is or has been upstairs checking the Bedford CA van on the back, always a bit of leeway with an arch bridge, we never had any measure stick or tape, just info sought off other drivers or ■■■■ it and see, personally got caught out three times  , one turn back(artic) and one(wagon and drag) letting tyres down on top deck cars also tightening the chains pulling down on the hydrolastic suspension on 1100s, another time cars off bottom deck, drop top deck, under bridge deck up and cars back on very deaf to honking traffic.

Hi Dean, Happy New Year. The Dodge with the Stepframe trailer looks like British Gas. The lower part of the trailer
is for carrying " 6 metre " lengths of pipe. Tools, joints, bends, and valves etc at the front end. Regards, Ray Smyth.

Hi all, A storey about this company.
We at Princes had an order for a new tractor and trailer, Gordon Crittell was the salesman (RIP) and he rang me this night saying if the unit and trailer were not in there yard by 17.00 the next day the deal was off.
The unit was ready, apart from a PDI but York let him down on delivery to us of the special trailer.
Can you imagin what we would do with that stuffed up our shirt
Very early next morning I shot into work, splashed greese onto the 5th wheel of our new to be demonstrator, checked it over, fueled it up and off !!.
Arrived at York trailers in Northallerton, sorted the money and paperwork and shot off for home in time for a couppling up and delivery to Millbrook furnishing " just in time" of there new outfit, Phew!!!
Early F10’s had 4, 12 volt batteries, one was smoking and nearly on fire but we did it. Harvey

Well I can’t really remember Durhams having Fodens, fleet at that time was mostly Seddon Atkinson and ERF. Wagon is pulling one of Sandersons trailers can see the green and purple band on trailer which copied Durhams orange and yellow band . Sandersons were taken over by Durhams hence the same style livery for a couple of years until depot was closed and were all amalgamated at Durhams main yard at Billingham.
Looks like a load of colliery arches out of BSC Lackenby. Great to see these pictures still Dean and a happy new year to you.

…and the ubiquitous bucket hanging from the bumper!!

Mark R:
Great to see the Cartrans Leyland…Every Depot had a different make of truck depending on what contract they were on. They were all different colours too but always had the stripe over the cab. I worked for the Queenborough depot on the Isle of Sheppey where we had Mercedes 1626 on the Toyota contract. The first ones were red 1626s with a white stripe and the second batch were white1625s with a red stripe. I wasn’t a driver back then, I worked in the yard.

I afraid Mark R they didn’t always have a stripe over the cab, that didn’t come in till late 70’s with that awful two tone Brown, originally BRS Red, then in 1970 changed to Red and White, then after the Lathams take over Lathams Blue and way back in the early 60’s alot were still in Furness and Parker Green, the name was changed to Cartransport (BRS) in 1968.

I didn’t know Mr Rainey personally but, after he passed away, W. H. Bowker acquired the 1934 Beaver shown on one of the pages, and we went down to collect it from Chilthorne Dorney in May 1998: here’s a photo I took at Frankley on the way back

GBV 759E & ABP 481 by 240 Gardner, on Flickr

The restoration had been completed, and it carried the livery of Bird Bros of Yeovil, for whom Mr Rainey’s father had driven.

It was repainted into Bowker’s period livery (they had operated a large number of Leylands with this cab):

5-08-2011_051, ABV 317M, Atkinson Borderer Stepframe with 1934 Leyland Beaver,ABP 481 by Ronnie Cameron, on Flickr

Sadly, it was destroyed in a warehouse fire in Leyland (along with the BCVM’s gas turbine Comet tractor), in December 2011.

Very belatedly, thank you!! Thanks for all your posting this year, Dean, not to mention the amazing collection of photos from Paul and Mark.

This is a Stoke Depot motor, one of the initial batch of seven 400 Series to join the fleet, all of which went to Stoke. They all had the 250 ■■■■■■■ engine, and an early, slightly anomalous version of the P&O corporate livery.

Can’t quite make out the reg on this but it’s in the range RBV 827-33P

Thank you Oily,

Great photo ,is that a Swindon vehicle ? code MEG ?

DEANB , the name Rocket Ron was because he was a typical BRS driver , no rushing about and stick to taking your time .

I was sixteen when introduced to RON when I was a apprentice in the workshops ,he grabbed me with a bear hug and I had to promise that I never get in his cab with overalls on “ever” ha ha , ■■■■ my self !!! .

Also years later when I went on the road I was told to take my time and never carve the job up ,and get plenty of dodgies in ! " which I did "

The Bird Bros Leyland , they had 2 of them and I can remember them passing our family house twice a day loading sand and gravel from Warmwell sand and gravel pits back to Yeovil.

Thanks for the info…i started at Cartransport in about 1982 when i was still officially at school. I just turned up one day and asked the manager if he had any Saturday jobs!..To my complete surprise he said " No not really, but if you want a job i’m sure we could find you something to do". He phoned up my parents to make sure it was ok and i stayed there for a couple of years! If there wasn’t anything for me to do I’d go out for a ride in one of the transporters. I was down the yard all through the schools holidays and most Saturday mornings. I dont think a 14 year old could do that these days.
Great time’s indeed.

Anyone recognise the Seddon Atkinson loaded with scrap ■■?

A03189p.JPG

Yes, W.H Phillips from Wirksworth. A large fleet, mostly Leyland and Atkinson when they finished but they did have LAD cabbed Dodge’s with Primrose second steer axles fitted and the Primrose advert in CM magazine used one of their Dodge’s. At one time they had 40+ trucks in our quarry alone plus some based at the tar plant in Tunstead quarry, Buxton, when the Manchester motorways were being built. I reckon they finished in the early late 70’s/80’s as we had some of their drivers, some of the trucks were on lease by that time I believe? Around a 90 vehicle fleet after they purchased Sid Cooks fleet from Wessington, all long gone now but their large garage is still there and used by a pillow company. Pics of them on the road are not common, and they didn’t stop still for long either!
