What a cracking photo of VBF263J this motor was new to S Jones Aldridge and driven by Graham Griffiths

Hi Dean,
Those milk floats were built near Tredegar.Evans transport did a lot of the work out of there and they also ran some Foden’s.
Regards Andrew.

Anyone recognise the F86 ■■?
I think it must belong to a subbie, as I would say the trailer and load must surely be one of Bewicks ?

Regards. John.

That load will be the same product that was unsheeted on an earlier shot, well at least the VOLVO driver has the right idea and the load will be safe but he still needs a bit of “tutoring” on sheeting and roping ! Cheers Bewick.

5Blue Dart Seddon Atkinson 400 Series Reg No WNB 999S.
Below is a picture of it’s stable mate Reg No WND 996S both were new in March 1978.
4Originally the transport arm of British Vita a competition was held amongst the drivers to come up with a name that had a connection with the Blue letter V that stood for Vita.
A driver called Barry Newton came up with the idea that if you turn the Blue V on it’s side then you got The Blue Dart hence it became Blue Dart Transport.
3 Blue Dart had depots across the country with Stakehill at Middleton near Manchester which opened in 1972 being their main office.
Enfield covered London, the South East, East Anglia, up to Milton Keynes in the North and as far as Oxford in the West.
Alan Gilzean the ex Totenham Hotspurs and Scottish International soccer player worked there as a business manager getting Blue Dart new contracts.
Bristol depot which was run by Stuart Wiltshire operated from a portacabin next to Temple Meads railway station later moving onto the docks at Avonmouth.
2 Bristol covered the West Country, the South West down to Southampton and the whole of South Wales.
Stoke depot was run by Albert Wain and worked mainly out of the Michelin factory in Stoke and covered most of the Midlands.
Barrow-in- Furness depot was started after Blue Dart took over Cooksies Transport of Barrow and worked mainly out of the Bowater Scott paper factory, they covered ■■■■■■■■ The Lake District , Carlisle and parts of South West Scotland.
1Fence Houses near Houghton -le -Springs in County Durham covered the North East and North Yorkshire and parts of South East Scotland.
Paisley which was situated in the Vitafoam depot on Renfrew Road covered the rest of Scotland and did the C.P.C. contract along with Stakehill out of Trafford Park.
United Biscuits out of Dundee and Michelin Tyres were just a couple of the very large contracts Blue Dart had at the time.
At the Vitafoam plant on Don Street in Middleton there was a garage and a lorry park which Blue Dart used and all the rigid vans along with some artics based there did all the Vitafoam transport.

Apologies if i have missed anything out but that gives you a general idea of how big a concern they were back in the day.

Well I have certainly learned something!

I am not sure about this but I think the flat floor York box trailers were sold to us at Draka Foam. They were a pain in th 'arris at most places but others were just what the doctor ordered!

Other firms in the flexible foam business were Kayfoam - Marple and Bollington (Macclesfield) Cheri Foam - Siloth, Hairlok - Bedford, Harrison and Jones - Oldham and Faversham possibly another depot? Dunlopillo - High Wycombe and Hirwain South Wales, I think there was a depot in Yorkshire?

Hi Dean, the Lamp Caps DAF,From Chesterfield iirc looks like a NU Chesterfield reg, cheers Alan

We used to park up with Kayfoam drivers in the old railway yard in Far Cotton, Northampton and frequent the Pomfret Arms round the corner. We used to eat at the adjacent Giggling Sausage café (part of the Super and Sizzling Sausage group of cafe’s) If memory serves, one of the Kayfoam drivers had the nickname of Jesus, I never got to know the drivers names for some reason? One of their drivers had a ‘dodgy’ night out and parked up on some spare land one day all was well until Granada Reports TV did an article about something or other and the camera got shot of his wagons’ fleet number and IIRC, he lost his job.

George Dew of Oldham also owned Buckton Vale quarry in Carrbrook Staylbridge they ran a fleet of Thames Trader tippers from there in the 60s, in fact most of the stone they quarried went on the new housing estates road constructions around Oldham & Manchester I remember my Dad used to do 5 load a day from Staylbridge to Ancoats in Manchester with a parrot nosed Dodge for a company called Thomas Lamb of Gorton this was in 1959/60.

Pretty sure that is the same model off Dodge used in ‘Hell Drivers’. Funny - I’ve had the picture from that film as my avatar for years. AND I just watched it again today, for the first time in years. (quite hard to find online, but eventually found it on ‘putlocker’)

It is the same model of Dodge that was in the film. When i started work as an apprentice mechanic in 1962 at the same firm (Thomas Lamb Ltd) as my Dad these were the lorries i worked on they had the Perkins P6 engine fitted they also ran the LAD model Dodge with the Perkins 6.354 and a few with the Leyland engine in.

Hi Dean, it’s more than likely that Pauls photo of the Blue Dart Seddon Atkinson was taken on it’s way to the Vitafoam factory in Measteg as Vita used to send at least one thirty six foot trailer from Middleton to Measteg every day. We used to backload out of Addis Plastics near Swansea (I think), a paper mill near Bridgend, Girling at Cwmbran and Mattoy toys near Newport or else it was over to Avonmouth for a load of new empty forty five gallon drums for “up North”.
I.I.R.C. Blue Dart bought out Hughes Haulage near Bridgend sometime in the seventies who had a few Scammell Crusaders, somebody might remember them.

Hello Pennineman, you might also remember Calligen Foam from Accrington who (I think) Vita also bought out and Panda Foam although I can’t remember where they were from.
Harrison and Jones may of also had a place at Ellesmere Port so hopefully somebody on here might remember it. I do remember delivering to Dunlopillow at Pannel near Harrogate in the early seventies, that may be the place that you were thinking of.

Hi Dean, Northwest Freighters were from Haydock, and the trailer is carrying the name of Kraft Foods at Kirkby. Regards, Ray Smyth.

A02330 (1).JPG That’s a cracking on the road shot Dean.
The late Peter Haworth ran John Marsh and Son (Blackpool) Ltd (Blackpool Van Transport) for 40 years.
The fleet mainly consisted of Atkinson’s, later moving on to Seddon Atkinson 401’s, ERF’s and a few Mercedes 1418 4X2 tractor units.
They were also the first company in the UK to take delivery of some Dennison tractor unit’s.

A few of the Atkinson Borderer’s that the company ran seen here parked in the yard on Midgeland Road in Blackpool.

These three Mercedes 1418 4X2 tractor units are pictured here when brand new in 1968.
Parked in the depot on Midgeland Road in Blackpool the two on the left are in John Marsh and Son livery while the other, Reg No OFR 445G on the right, is in Blackpool Van Transport (BVT) livery.

An article showing the first Dennision 4x2 tractor unit to enter service with John Marsh & Son (Blackpool) Ltd.

An ariel shot of the long gone depot on Midgeland Road Blackpool taken shortly before closure.

Owner of Blackpool Van Transport the late Peter Haworth alongside Atkinson Borderer Reg No HXG 442 at Midgeland Road Blackpool in June 1986 which was later sold on for preservation.

In 1996 after some 40 years building the firm up to what it was operating more than 38 tractor units and 100 trailers owner, the late Peter Haworth, finally decided that enough was enough and decided to voluntary liquidate John Marsh and BVT not only due to health problems but mainly due to contract customers holding back payment and the ever increasing running costs etc.

Sadly Peter Haworth passed away in May 2006 aged 79.

Photographs courtesy of Chris Haworth (Peter Haworth’s Grandson).

A02333.JPGThe fleet at Northwest Freighters who were based in Haydock consisted of refrigerated trailers, dry boxes along with a few flats.
The majority of work for the reefers was for Kraft Foods of Kirkby, Raines Dairies of Enfield along with shellfish from the Isle of Man through Manx Hauliers (a Northwest subsidiary) for Belgium & France.
They also transported hanging beef from Kilmarnock to Antwerp Belgium while return loads from Europe consisted of cheese from Kraft Foods in Germany & Belgium, frozen chickens from Northwest France and frozen beef from Holland.

Here’s a selection of pictures sent to me back in 2008 by former Northwest Freighters driver Tommy Jensen who drove for them from from 1982 until 1990 when the company finally went under. :frowning:

’B’ Series ERF Reg No CRF 808T which was powered by a Rolls Royce 265 is seen here in Bruge in 1986 while delivering scallops from the Isle of.Man afer which time Tommy reloaded with cheese back from Namur.

Toddington services 1989 with Tommy Jensen bound for Kraft at Fallingbostal in Germany while Alan Deluce driving the MAN was going to Kraft at Namur both trailers were loaded with empty pallets.

ERF E14 Reg No F494 ABG powered by a 320 ■■■■■■■ is seen here at Muhlhausen rest stop while taking a load of cheese to Neu Ulm in Germany in 1989.

Thanks again to Tommy Jensen for sharing his interesting pictures.
