Limey:
Crikey!
The two S39 tippers discussed earlier were only in Staveley livery for a relatively brief period before they were transferred to the Biesty fleet where they were christened the Flying Pig and the Plastic Pig. Before being delivered new to Staveley they were both on the Foden stand at some show in Germany. That is the only photo of either of them I have ever seen in Staveley livery.
Many thanks to Paul for this treasure trove of past times. Of course when he was taking these marvellous images all the sights would have been commonplace and mundane which makes the collection even more remarkable.
Thanks for your comments, more to come !

DEANB:
“Piston broke” Paul i think this is another shot of your motor ?
Jeez, that’s amazing
It certainly is Dean… Many thanks to you for posting, and obviously Paul for taking it and allowing it to be posted
She’s definitely fairly fresh out of the box there. Being driven by the first pilot, Roger Ashley, and dragging a Merriworth 33ft flat.
Would that have been taken on the M4 somewhere?
I have a vague recollection of those gas tanks at Swindon…
Many thanks again
Thought you would like that chap !

Morning Dean,
It could be, I’ll be leaving office in a minute and may bump into one of Mervyns drivers later today, I have taken a screen shot to show him, also at that time Mervyn ran a couple of ERF B series 8 wheelers some with 265 RR and at least one with the 280/290 RR, The Sed Atki’s gave way to the first “foreigner” shortly after these pics we’re taken, it was a Scania 141, I have a pic of a new Defender chassis that was Mervyns, supplied by Rylands and the salesman was definately Saviem as I asked him about it and he remembered the deal, I will get permission and post it, Thanks again Dean and Paul

Hiya,Dean the Transcon of H.J.Atlas definitely went to the Middle East…JAR 51N I believe,I think they were based in Avonmouth/Bristol area going by the phone number on the tilt.,heres a shot(not mine),Cheers Bubbs
Thanks Bubbs, there must have been dozens of companies that did the middle east apart from the well
known ones !
mushroomman:
Hi Dean, I have just got back from my holidays and so I have spent all day looking at this fantastic collection of old photos. Please thank Paul for sharing them with us and as they say “every picture tells a story”. This H.J. Atlas D.A.F. is taken from the Trucknet archives so it would be interesting to find out if that Transcon in Pauls photo ever ventured out towards Iran.
That T.K. behind the two Fearns M.A.N. tankers looks like it belonged to Schrieber Furniture from Trafford Park maybe early to mid seventies.
P.S. Thanks to Bubbs for answering the question about the Transcon .
Regards Steve.
Thanks for your comments Steve, glad you are enjoing the thread ! The mighty Bedford must have been
the biggest seller by along way i would imagine in the 70’s.
pete 359:
DEANB:
I reckon pete359 might know a bit about this one ?
F88 loaded with sheep.
hi dean,
That 240 F88 looks like its one of Brick Bros of hereford to me? I think they still own the filling station near hereford that the trucks once ran from? Thanks again for sharing these outstanding, time warp images.
regards andrew.
Thanks Andrew ,i thought that you might have driven for that company as from memory you had a nice
F88 in similar colours ■■

If I’m being honest Dean I love looking at all the pics not just the quarry tippers. There’s something in them all and it’s amazing how much the haulage scene has changed in the 40 or so years since the photos were taken. These days you’d have to be a true die hard to stand at the side of the road taking pics of the modern rubbish that hauls our goods up and down. The pics stand as true testaments to the lorries and drivers that did the job back then.
Of course we’re all indebted to Paul for taking the pics and allowing them to be uploaded and thanks also to yourself Dean for taking the time to scan and post them!
As I’ve previously said the tippers are my main interest but alongside ‘thelongdrag’ I also love the Derbyshire lorries of which I’ve spotted R Hansons from Chapel en le frith, E Stead from Buxton, BJ Waters from Darley Dale, Sellers and Kent from Ilam and WH Phillips from Wirksworth. It’s also great to see others I remember seeing as a kid, companies like GR Stein, British Salt, Walshs from Haslington and of course all the Tilcon, Hoveringham and Amey Roadstone tippers.
The thread has been going barely three weeks but it’s already a firm favourite with so many!
All that’s left for me to say is very well done chaps and we all look forward to seeing whatever treasures pop up next.
Thanks “BonkeyDollocks” for your comments and your input on this thread much appreciated !
There will be more tippers today ! Is the Seddon BJ Waters ■■
It most certainly is Dean. There were quite a few in the fleet including artics all running on coal etc.
BTW, thanks for the Biesty pic in todays offerings. As Limey said, the Staveley S39 soon changed it’s skin to a Biesty tipper and it’s wonderful to see it and the other biesty lorries.
Lovely stuff
Cheers “BD” alot more tippers to come !
Starting off with a Guy Big J
