Good stuff Paul, sounds like a good old company if they lasted 100 years in the ownership of the original
family. Do you know what truck that is in the black and white pic, looks tidy !![]()

6Santa Fe, i understand they have now bought Ralph Davies out.End of an era or what ■■?

I thought Santa Fe went bust or something then started back up as atchinson Topeka? (Spelling?)
Just checked when the lovely looking Davies 141 was last taxed, end of July 1984! Wonder what happened for it to only last 4 years.
This one I’m on about. The quote with image failed [emoji45]

2Gateway has its origins in a Bristol-based grocer known as J H Mills which was founded in 1875.
It later developed into a self-service supermarket chain named Gateway Foodmarkets in 1960.
During the early 1970’s Gateway operated primarily in the southwest of England with a few stores elsewhere.
In May 1994 the company changed its name to Somerfield plc who In 1998 took over rival Kwik Save in a £473 million deal.
In March 2009 Somerfield was taken over by the Co-operative Group in a £1.57 billion deal creating the UK’s fifth-largest food retailer with the Somerfield name replaced by the Co-operative brand in a rolling program of store conversions ending in summer 2011.1
0Photograph courtesy of Tim WaltonGateway also took over Fine Fare Supermarkets
They ran a large fleet of Orange ERFs and Leyland Buffalos
There’s a day cabbed ERF “C” series which has been restored in Fine Fare colours going round the vintage scene
I wish she was going round Gary; she’s mine! Unfortunately I’ve had her laid up since 2004 (when my daughter was born and we moved house
) but rest assured I’ll have her sorted again when time and money permit!
On a brighter note, a mate of mine has just bought an ex Fine fare A-reg ERF unit from a showman. This wagon was also based at Hucknall same as mine. Coincidentally, his dad was also a driver at Fine Fare as was mine
His lorry has been stretched and had a box van fitted, but I think he intends to convert it back to a tractor unit.
Cheers,
Tony

There’s a day cabbed ERF “C” series which has been restored in Fine Fare colours going round the vintage scene. This is the ERF mentioned, I took this at Gaydon not long after the restoration. I showed this to my younger Brother he drove for Fine Fare then Gateway from the Hucknall depot, Buffalo’s, ERF’s and Scania’s in Gateway colours. He said he knew the unit and the driver as they came from the same depot (I believe it was the driver who owned and restored it). Fine Fare also had a depot in Washington in the Northeast, my father worked there in the warehouse and a couple of mates drove for them, it was a decent job too at the time, shame when it went belly up. Franky.

Hi Franky, you must be Keith’s brother then? Do you know when he started at Hucknall, coz I can’t quite recall him - he would have been one of the ‘new’ lads who started just as the job was going over to BRS on contract. My dad (Malcolm) worked there from 1964 to when BRS took over in 1987. I bought the lorry in 1993 and restored it back to the how you see her here.
I remember Keith from my time in the traffic office at K&M Hauliers when he was an OD and subbing for us on SAPA work.
Regards,
Tony Perry

I do recall my Brother mentioning a Jonny Staton, see if he knows Keith Dobson Tony. He done a bit OD with a four wheeler DAF after Gateway mainly running Aluminium Sections until he’d had enough then became a Paramedic which he’s still doing. Cheers Franky.
