Cracking pic of Wintles
Lovely colours and a really smart fleet, sadly no longer trading - I cannot remember exactly when they closed but it must be at least 20 years ago now⊠They used to haul a lot of coal amongst other things - the load home for a couple of artics everyday was to their own coal yard, ready to be bagged and delivered the next day on their small fleet of Bedford TK coal lorries
As always, great pics Dean and Paul. Thank you both
Hi piston broke,
Every day this threads photos just get better than the last.I went to the G.H.Wintle sale, back in February 2000.A very old established company, ran steamers.Robin Wintle is a friend of mine,he married a Welsh girl and lives locally.
Regards Andrew.
Hi Andrew
I completely agree with you, it is an amazing collection of photos. A really enjoyable wander down Memory Lane⊠Not quite as long ago as I thought then - thank you for that. What a small world we live in, I never realised Robin moved across the bridge but often wondered where he was now⊠I never really knew him personally - we always moved in slightly different circles - but always knew, and admired, their smart fleet of lorries. I only live a mile or so from both of their former yards nowâŠ
Regards
Paul

Now i must pay homage to Paul Geeâs âshedâ ! Sorry i mean marina van. Ever since i found out he used to
own one i have been giving him stick about it,as my uncle owned a saloon and it was horrible ! Anyway
Paul bought his at 4 years old for ÂŁ 400.00 and promptly hand painted it with a brush to protect it from
rust !!

It must have worked as the shed lasted him 13.5 years,so it cost him ÂŁ 29.63 per year ! To be fair thatâs impressive and cheap motoring. (And he still has the brush !
)
It even had a go faster white stripe down it,that apparently did not work as he said you had to time
over taking maneuvers very carefully !
After about 5 minutes i am reliably informed by Paul that
a top speed of 70 miles per hour could be achieved on the flat, but slightly quicker if going down hill !
Heres a pic of the hand painted shed.

It didnât have to be that bad.The story goes that the government actually wanted ze Germans to win for geopolitical reasons.
Thatâs a proper Marina shed.

I drove this motor once or twice in a previous life when it belonged to Sykes Bulk Liquids. As you can see the picture came from Bubblemanâs Scrapbook.

Buzzer:
The Seddon looks like ex Bulwark to me, Buzzer.
Thereâs an article in the latest edition of the CVRTCâs newsletter about Bulwark and they bought a few Seddon 30/4 tractor units with the Rolls Royce Eagle engine, but found this engine option to be heavy on fuel usage and had high maintenance costs. Further Seddon 30/4 orders were for Gardner 6LXB 180 engines versions, including one order for 40 of them to beat the 6bhp / ton legislation.
I rest my case about those Seddon 32/4 with the RR engine being a total load of crap ! Cheers Dennis.
Sorry, my original post should have read 32/4 (not 30/4).
As to scanning the article it is part 4 of a series about Bulwark, so getting the continuation and sequence could be problematic.

Used to run with them, 70s, pits mostly I canât remember seeing any but Foden so presume they finished before Foden did. When the pits closed it took a lot of hauliers with it.
People dont realise the knock on effect when something like the pits closing down has on loads of other businesses and jobs, the affect must have been huge !

Kendricks used to get up as far as Millom when the Iron Works were operating , probably brought a load of scrap up then they loaded back to the Midlands with Pig Iron it would have been a right old drag for them on the Road in and out of Millom !. Cheers Bewick.
Thanks for your comment Dennis !

Kendricks had 70+ trucks at one time, all Fodens I believe and some were trailing axle eight wheelers. I think that the miners strike finished them as they were blacklisted?

They were a big old outfit then Pete !
Anyone got any yard shots â â ?

Hi cookie1,
As a kid I went to the midlands regularly.i seem to recall a large brick chimney type structure with Kendrick written on it vertically? Across the way from jct2 M5 northbound, would i be right in thinking that would be the same firm? I used to see their Fodenâs regularly in South Wales.
Regards andrew.

Hi Andrew
That was a different Kendrick, think they where metal spinners, Horace Kendrick was on Green lane Walsall, left at Police station and the yard was on the right before Talbot Stead tube works, Pete
Cheers for confirming that Pete !
