The upper “bumper” fitted to both the MK1 and Mk11 Atkys was called “The crash bar” and was probably assumed to save the glass fibre cab form more serious damage, whether this proved to be the case is probably open to debate but at least it was a recognised “adornment” for the Atky. In the final years of Atky production those [zb] from Oldham discontinued the cast crash bar for a “rolled” facsimile( probably to save money  ) which was only for visual purposes in later years and probably bent like a “pig ring” in an Accident ! Not that any of the Atkys we ran at Bewick Transport were involved in “testing” either type of Crash bar ! Cheers Dennis.

It did worse, Dennis… I had one on my 6x2 Atki, and a gorilla with an AEC Matador, supposedly helping it into a steam fair whilst fully freighted and in ankle deep mud on a slope, managed to pull the top bumper into four pieces by setting off at right angles with the chain lying on the ground and not even pausing to take up the slack (I was some distance away in another wagon at the time)

And I can just imagine you sinking to your knees in the slutch with your head in your hands Chris ! I know I would Mate  Then when you calmed down I bet the air turned “electric blue” eh! Cheers Dennis.

When I got to the wagon, it was parked up in the field, and it was already dark. Then I tried to close the cab door and it wouldn’t…

But fortunately, it was just the end of a rope draped out through the door 'ole and all was well when I moved it out of the way

All was well apart, pf course, from the 4-piece crash bar :imp:

And this was just getting IN to the venue :unamused:

Fortunately, a nice man with another Matador, and with a much larger brain, pulled me gently backwards up the hill by the trailer to get out and showed everyone how it should be done. No sign of the idiot once daylight came, of course.

Needless to say, a cast bar went on the following weekend!

A while back you had a shot of a rigid of Greenaways from Cornwall which I identified as they had very small signwriting on the cab and today on FB I found this but never knew they ran artics and usually carried banana’s, cheers Buzzer.

Great shots of the Scammell factory at Watford which looks like a very low key operation even in those days, I wonder how profitable they actually were within the Leyland group ? as compared to say Atkinson and ERF, as I was never much interested in Scammell I’m not sure what their yearly chassis build was but there always seemed plenty of them about in years gone by. Cheers Bewick.

I had a tour of the Scammell factory in 1985, when it was getting towards the end of its days. I was surprised how cramped for space it was and how basic the assembly facilities were. It had obviously been starved of capital investment for many years, although the site had no room for expansion. Scammell management enjoyed far more autonomy and had much less interference from head office than any other Leyland group subsidiary. It was the smallest chassis assembly plant of the Leyland group and in a busy year typically it would build 1,500 to 1,600 chassis, but remember it took much longer to build a heavy haulage job than a Highwayman or Handyman, plus it also built trailers. Of all the group subsidiaries Scammell always enjoyed a good relationship with AEC.

Interesting Graham, a 90’s tour of the Dennis factory was in similar vein. You always imagine these places are tip top assembly line enterprises similar to say the current Nissan factory but some of the things seen seemed from the 40’s or 50’s, makes you understand how certain makers declined. Franky.

Dan, I think the SED/Atki may belong to Richard (Dickie) Marsden as it looks like Lansing Henley on the headboard. They did a lot of work for Henley Forklifts Pontlanfraith.
The Glamon Atki looks like one out of Glyn Johns hire fleet and its pulling one of his trailers. possible he bought Glamon to get some work!
Kingswinford kit, that doesn’t look like Natural Gas Tube product on Owens trailer, plus you had to have side posts or U shape channel to load pipe out of there.
B Chilton had some nice looking trucks, mostly Volvo’s and a nice yard and garage in Oakdale. Used to have a local guy load trailers and road guys haul arse up and down the road. Got caught doing naughty stuff, sort of disappeared when he did time!

I’ll have a look ,I think I have some pics with lancing Henley on the headboard .
