Love the Scammell Handyman photo, don’t know who’s it was though. Never heard of Glamon Haulage either, great Atki photo though.
Thanks for the comment Mark.

The upper “bumper” fitted to both the MK1 and Mk11 Atkys was called “The crash bar” and was probably assumed to save the glass fibre cab form more serious damage, whether this proved to be the case is probably open to debate but at least it was a recognised “adornment” for the Atky. In the final years of Atky production those [zb] from Oldham discontinued the cast crash bar for a “rolled” facsimile( probably to save money
) which was only for visual purposes in later years and probably bent like a “pig ring” in an Accident ! Not that any of the Atkys we ran at Bewick Transport were involved in “testing” either type of Crash bar !
Cheers Dennis.
It did worse, Dennis… I had one on my 6x2 Atki, and a gorilla with an AEC Matador, supposedly helping it into a steam fair whilst fully freighted and in ankle deep mud on a slope, managed to pull the top bumper into four pieces by setting off at right angles with the chain lying on the ground and not even pausing to take up the slack (I was some distance away in another wagon at the time)
Nasty !

And I can just imagine you sinking to your knees in the slutch with your head in your hands Chris ! I know I would Mate
Then when you calmed down I bet the air turned “electric blue” eh! Cheers Dennis.

When I got to the wagon, it was parked up in the field, and it was already dark. Then I tried to close the cab door and it wouldn’t…
But fortunately, it was just the end of a rope draped out through the door 'ole and all was well when I moved it out of the way
All was well apart, pf course, from the 4-piece crash bar
And this was just getting IN to the venue
Fortunately, a nice man with another Matador, and with a much larger brain, pulled me gently backwards up the hill by the trailer to get out and showed everyone how it should be done. No sign of the idiot once daylight came, of course.
Needless to say, a cast bar went on the following weekend!
Thank christ the bloke with the matador was there !
Buzzer:
A while back you had a shot of a rigid of Greenaways from Cornwall which I identified as they had very small signwriting on the cab and today on FB I found this but never knew they ran artics and usually carried banana’s, cheers Buzzer.
Indeed you did Buzzer , Here it is again !

Great shots of the Scammell factory at Watford which looks like a very low key operation even in those days, I wonder how profitable they actually were within the Leyland group ? as compared to say Atkinson and ERF, as I was never much interested in Scammell I’m not sure what their yearly chassis build was but there always seemed plenty of them about in years gone by. Cheers Bewick.
Must admit i thought it looked a bit laid back, does not look like it was the quickest production life !
