Barlow and Hodge! The spare cans of diesel must be either on the catwalk or hiding in the cab! Ken Hodgkinson owned and drove a red Ford D Series four wheeler in our quarry when I started there, he tended to do the London trips (Canning Town I think?) with it.
We took over from Barlows when he got in trouble with the ministry , and bought some of the artic tankers . The one I got was stinking of diesel and had 5rings on the bunk where the diesel cans had stood , whoever drove it must had a permanent headache . The late Jimmy Buxton was astounded when he drew his first wage , twice the money for half the work , Barlow ripped them off for years . Jimmy once told me of coming into the yard at 6 pm from a Devon ( bent for a start )and Barlow handed him a loading note “8am Paisley get going “ I don’t know why the drivers put up with him .
Hi Buzzer Thanks for posting the photo of the Scania LS 110 tankers on Carlsberg contract was the photo taken at Watneys on Mile end road ■■?

Buzzer,
Hi, good to see the photos of the London Brick eight wheelers.
In the early sixties I was an apprentice at Jones Motors in Kenfig Hill and they had a few ex London Brick eight
wheelers on site work at what was then The Steel Company of Wales at Port Talbot.
I seem to remember that they used to have brake problems even though they didn’t do a lot of mileage.
Of course back then there were thousands more people working there ( maybe thinking back working is not the right word) than there are now. Although the site covers much the same area a lot of buildings have been demolished. Jones Motors became Joint Motorways and was one of main hauliers. It was still owned and operated the Jones family. It ceased trading some twenty plus years ago.
Regards, Allan

Reminds me of when I worked at a kitchen cabinet manufacturer that got deliveries of porcelain sinks on a flat trailer. They weren’t in boxes but stood up leaning forward against the one in front with just straw in between them. I used to help the lads unload them if I was in and they said they never had one scratched let alone Broken.

Any idea where this photo is taken Buzzer ?

This is dedicated to Pete Smith, Oily, as he is a closet Merc fan… I’d better get me coat…
Interesting vehicle though as the engine doesn’t seem to be a Merc product?

Many happy hours of the six week school holidays of 58 or 59 spent at the Marston Valley brick works. As I remember it, the sand face bricks had the straw. We took 'em all over the place in the old Hippo that pulled like a ruptured duck as the old man used to say. It stopped even worse than it pulled and that’s saying something. Whichever summer it was it was a right hot one. Add that that to all the heat from the ovens and we looked forward to the bloke coming round with a bucket of lemon barley water. All that sort of thing stood me in good stead for later in life; not just the driving, roping, sheeting etc, (bricks were one cross at the back) but as a work ethic.
