Past Present and in Between in Pictures (Part 1)

tyneside:
Two different vehicles from the Sunderland area an oil tanker and a refuse wagon, can any one help with the manufacturers.

Tyneside

The dustbin lorry is a Karrier, and the tanker looks a bit like an S type Bedford, but not certain from this angle. Cheers, Ray.

From F/B again Tyneside

The Shell tanker is definitely an S model Bedford

Wynns outfit parked up
Picture was cobbled together from a couple of 110 prints.
It took me a while to learn that the 110 was near useless
though to be fair i wasnt really interested in photography.
I had bought it to take on holiday, a tour of California,Arizona and Nevada.
some years earlier. I should have realised then it was a mistake.

What a nightmare of a photo, Larry, I never tipped there but I did at Spitalfields and it was very reminiscent of that.
With a load of apples backloaded from Hull I was told to get to the customer at 3am and pitch outside his place. Trouble was he was a late starter and I was stopping the artics getting round the corner so had to keep going round the block. He eventually turned in at around 8 and I started to get my ropes and sheets off. The boxes were flying off the back and I thought at last I was onto a good thing. Then it all went quiet, for about 20 minutes or so, and then suddenly it all went mad again. He was selling the bloody things of the back of my wagon, using me as a market stall. :open_mouth:

I finally got tipped around 11, never went near the place again.

Spitalfields (the fields) was a dump, but not quite as bad as the borough… pretty close call though.

Covent Garden market 1970.

I suppose you could say this was the classic find. This Bugatti was owned by a Doctor in Newcastle and was apparently parked in his garage in about 1960 and never moved again. He lived alone and when he died about 3 or 4 years ago his family found the car.
I understand it was subsequently sold but don’t know how much for. (Apologies to the local lads up here who will probably know the story)

Wow! What a find, I’ve never heard the tale of that beauty, I’ll look forward to hearing it.
Regards Kev.

Thanks for the info Oily. The Chronicle ran a story about the car when it was first found but then it dropped of the radar i often wondered what happened. Quite a windfall for the family !!!

The ubiquitous Hillman Imp. The local police in Gateshead & Newcastle had quite a fleet of these. It also looks like the ITV staff are out on strike as well! I haven’t been along that end of City Road for years but I think the ITV studios have been demolished now.

Hillman imp police car 1.jpg

Yeah all gone now Tyneside, you would have thought they might have kept something of the old studios even if it was Student flats like every other old building in Newcastle seems to have been turned into! The Egypt Cottage next door (which was also earmarked for demo) was the watering hole of many of the staff and visiting celebs, that must have seen a downturn in customers when ITV closed down. By the way Egypt Cottage was named from the area being known as Little Egypt because of the huge piles (pyramids) of grain or spices placed on the Quayside from ships. Franky.
