Past Present and in Between in Pictures (Part 1)

A44 Welsh Border.

Formerly Truckers on the A40 near Symonds Yat,Herefordshire.

Is that Symond’s Yat service area flattened now Dave? I used to stay there quite regular in the 70s. A cafe both sides of the road but the digs were on the southbound IIRC. There was boozer just up the hill and one on the northbound side further down, one was called the Crown I’m sure.

One from the past here for you lads

Yeah Dave,i’m asking the same ,as i stayed there regular in the early 70s and also use that pub,Vic.

Hi Chris & Vic,
No its still open as a fuel station and a shop type place with parking for LGV’s etc.Now owned by Henry Danter who owns a lot of leisure parks and amusement parks. The cafes you two refer too became Little Chef’s,now closed. The one on the northbound carriageway is back to a normal cafe called " The Highway Star " ,not much good for lorries as the park is small, but ok for smaller vehicles.A couple of pubs up the road as you say.
Cheers Dave.

Thanks, OILTREADER ?Dave The Renagade ,thanks for the info ? photos, they were great ,its know wonder i used to see them all over the place ,with such a large fleet 90 plus wow , ps ,there is a green Dodge Kew flat with sideboards on, i think it was new to a coal merchant near us named Sid Hall from ,Connahs /Quay ,North Wales can you shed any light ,Yours Barry

Hi Barry,
Can’t shed any light on the Dodge Kew.I live 7 miles south of Knighton,so I don’t know many of the hauliers from North Wales.I see the bigger outfits like Roland Young coming into the local quarries near here. Also see the Gwynedd Shipping motors around plus a few others.
The bigger firms this way these days are Burgoynes of Lyonshall and Mervyn Thomas ( Radnorshire ),lots of smaller hauliers, but as I said we are to far away from the motorway for the big outfits these days.
Cheers Dave.

Another couple from Mark Hobb’s collection, mostly in and around Chepstow. I had a nice reply from him with regard to posting his pics on here.
