Never had the opportunity to drive one of those.
What were they like? remember drivers saying they went like “pooh off a shovel” and others saying they were crap.
Must have been like Marmite . . bit like Ivecos
Oily…Johnny Pratt is driving a taxi in Rugby.
Suedehead, I drove a Berrerios Dodge brand new straight out the box, one of 2 BRS truck rental had, I had it the first week it was on the road while my Borderer was in for MOT, pulled like a train, and a nice throaty sound, my Brother had one a few years later, and to this day it’s the only lorry i’ve done Coventry to Southampton in 2 hours with 20 ton of coke cola, and that was before the M40,and Newbury bypass.
Evening all, suedehead, as dieseldog66 have said, “they could really go”! I remember the “colourful” Hereford haulier Eddie Gammond, having an early example, which was involved in an accident which necesetated a cab replacement. Iwould suspect that “economic” reasons were the instigator in the replacement cab being a Leyland Ergomatic, which to fit over the high “Scania” based Barreros diesel sat rather high from the ground!! Now this vehicle, looking in ones mirror like a leyland , would gain ground, and hurtle past one like no Leyland ever could!! It was the quickest “thing” out of South Wales on the M50 for quite some time!
I think that it was Pats 77 Eurotest, for Truck magazine, and I had been involved with our TR305, Barreros were also there, and the Spaniards were quite “sore”, having had years of chaotic management under Chrysler, and now with Peugeot Citroens truck interests, Dodge, Commer, Barreros, “handed” to Renault Vehicules Industriels, they had a point to make!
The point being that they were good engineers, and could produce a very usefull machine. The cosmetics of the example submited were poor, the paint job looked like emulsion paint, (and they had missed some bits)! But the lorry, boy, it surprised all of us, it went, handled, and drove like a thoroughbred, and was not bad on fuel.
I think the Dodge Network in the UK moved quite a few, both tractors and rigid 6 & 8wheelers, Coventry & Jeffs in Bristol, Days in Chelmsford, and the Dealer in Hereford, I believe sold most. But with the takeover of Dodge in the UK by RVI , I believe the remaining stock was “blown out”, at very low price indeed, following a series of advertisments along the lines of, "A 38tonner for £…, (with no mention of the actual manufacturer whatsoever!
The 300P soldiered on in Spain and Portugal for a short time, eventually being re-cabbed with the KB42 Berliet designed cab, (an old colleague of mine from Venissieux leading the engineering team responsible). This version lasted into the mid 80s, before being superseded by the RVI product. A sad end to potentially a very good lorry, but its build quality, and lack of development and ensuing reliability issues, always limited its long term future… But yes it could really move!!
S Barreros moved to Cuba, and created their indiginous lorry engine building industry, but that really interesting story is for another time. Cheerio for now.
Barreiros in different guises. I also remember seeing them on the road and the exhaust note was something else, a throaty growl more like, and they did go. I have a few more pics of them, mostly un-traceable for ownership.

From far away NZ and thanks to Rod Simmonds, I post this with the , what’s with the half buried tyre in the foreground, some sort of distance judgement
, obviously it can be run over without damage, me i’m thinking its a bit clever whatever it’s for
. Maybe the yard dog buried it

I think his medication is starting to take effect bma.! Or maybe he has,at last, realised that promoting the DD on this site is rather like trying to “■■■■ into a head on 100kph wind” Cheers Dennis.
