Past Present and in Between in Pictures (Part 1)

GEO BEER & SONS, SWANSEA.

Great input, this past few days both pics and info, a couple from MOC stirred my memory, the B J Henry cartransporter, B J Henry was in right at the start of car making at Cowley, as folklore has it, good friends with both Billy Morris (later Lord Nuffield) and Cecil Kimber of MG origins. Their first yard was in Between Towns Rd. Cowley, they were taken over by Autocars. The other pic is of the ABM Foden, Associated British Maltsters (I think), they had a place just off The Vineyard, Abingdon, about where Waitrose supermarket is now, a good mate of mine, Doug Heale from Cholsey left Progressive to go on for them and had an identical Foden.
Onward with a photo or two taken in the Western Isles or Outer Hebrides where except for one rainy day at Uig on Skye, the weather was brilliant, in fact the islands were suffering a bit of a drought.

This Scania (taken Uig, Skye going south on the 9th) and again at Lochmaddy, a week later 16th ( waiting for ferry to Uig) heading south again. Chatting to a D R MacLeod driver, he informed me he was carrying live fish in tanks and that the unit( bit louder than a fridge motor) on the trailer n/side was for oxygenation of the water. Some of you will recognise the reg and country, I’m guessing France and back.

A Ferguson Volvo at Uig, note the price of fuel.

Found these in my collection. The changing face of rallies over the years. The first picture taken in Sussex in 1972, my motor is the “youngster” on the left. The other taken a couple of years ago at Wisbech. When I started on historic commercials, there were very few big fleets like nowadays. Incidentally, I towed my Albion home in 1970 with a Dodge D series like the one in the Knowles’ line-up, it was fairly new at the time , in my brother’s working fleet, nice little motor, wish I had it now!

More memories, I had a wagon and drag (Carrimore) going on 3 years, and also in '67 got a new AEC Mercury ergo 7 car Carrimore running nights Oxford to Carlisle. The Mandator shown was Johnny Pratt’s motor.
