Crossley Richard 33728416170_55325cdc01rs_k.jpg

I have travelled a few miles in that Crossley when I was young, it used to be a Reading Corporation bus! The Folley Brothers Bedford is interesting as well, their pit is still operating just off of the Reading to Henley road at Dunsdon but I believe LaFarge have it nowadays?

Oily, that’s not just a chassis in the flickr picture, if you look closely you can just see the ends of a pair of ramps. It was converted to a transporter and used to carry a steam traction engine named Pandora, so the lorry was generally known as Pandy’s Pram. I watched it in operation at a steam rally years ago, very clever engineering, a system of gears or pulleys rotated the ramps round to the side, the steamer driven on to the ramps, then the ramps complete with steamer turned back in parallel with the chassis ready for the road. Must be some film of it in action somewhere but I’ve not found it, though if you google the reg. number you’ll find a picture of it with the steamer loaded.
