We used to nip up that one way street opposite Stafford Road Tony, if you didn’t and went round then one of your fellow workmates would use it to get past you and beat you to the job so you had to keep your wits about you! A bit tight at times, especially if pedestrians were using it.

Pete.

Yes Pete. One way street was Church Street.Still there but bollards on it.I bet you remembeber G & A Harris ( Gandi Harris) the agrigulural machine folks who had a "shop " in the Market Place with some machines on the front. They also had a bike shop in High Street.I sold him a D- Series but we had to swap a body from the old Austin they had.Millmore did the job and a bloody good one.Same street I sold a couple of D-Series to Wooliscofts the corn merchants but they had to be a certain lengh to back up to the loading dock as they would stick out into the road which was narrow enough anyway

I’l bet if you could find one now it would be worth a bob or two.Never sold or driven one but they didn’t look bad.I think a few fleet owners ran them.

Tony

I remember Walls having a largish fleet of those Thames vans in their cooked meat division, maybe the ice cream section also ran them as well?

Pete.

  1. I ‘ventilated’ the engine block on one of the 4 cyl. diesels. Harrison of Dewsbury, on my way to my daily round in Manchester, got as far as Mirfield and BOOM. I’ve no idea what happened, I’d checked the oil and water but I was told later by the fitter that a con rod had made a bid for freedom.
One thing I do remember about them, you could start them with your foot :open_mouth: , yes, with your foot. The starter was operated by a small lever at the base of the engine cover/cowl. Jump in, quick flick with your foot and away you went.
