Hi Pete, In the late 1950s I remember seeing this Albion 8 wheeler of Alex Cowan & Sons , Papermillers of Penicuik passing through Carlisle on the A6 in the days before the M6 frequently. Always immaculately turned out in a dark royal blue livery.
Cheers Leyland 600.

Hi Leyland 600, A motor that would be top of my wish list as a lottery winner! but I will have to settle with its little brother, the Chieftain! According to the records it was a 6 wheeler with a drag when new making it a HD55 but could not carry enough so they got rid of trailer and shoved a second steer under her,I suppose papermill long gone as well as the Albion,Cheer’s Pete
A good looking motor with a good load on her

Great picture of an Albion in SoM livery, its the first refurbed Smiths motor I’ve seen on the show circuit, pleased to see it,wouldn’t it be great if there was a Big J with a 240 in it,and in SoM livery, that would be a catch!

It does seem odd that Motor Panels of Coventry saw fit to pitch the windscreen of its half-cabbed Foden tipper forward, presumably to reduce the glare of tropical sunlight in the steamy the Derbyshire Dales. Aerodynamics clearly wasn’t at the forefront of their thinking. But who am I to knock this design: I’m sure that there were drivers who were grateful for this innovation - anyone remember its advantages? Robert

Here’s a well loaded S50 and to robert1952, my take on the reverse slope windscreen would be something to do with light reflection, it didn’t catch on so maybe not.

Sticking with Fodens, two more.

Advantages Robert, NIL apart from being light and easy to work on! After a few years the screens would fall out anyway as the cab cracked badly around the screen area, and elsewhere! The offside mirror reflected badly as well. Insurance was expensive as there was only one ‘proper’ exit in event of a crash. Most of our 30 tonners were recabbed at North Riding garages, Darlington, with S40’s which gave them a further lease of life.
Pete.
Cheers Oiltreader and Windrush! The Dutch tried something similar with their '70s service buses, but as you say it never really caught on. Robert
