A couple of comments Oily, been away for a couple of days hauling 2 giant dogs up from Carcassonne. Be away for another 2 in the morning taking one of them on up to Avranches.
Firstly, that picture of Kurt’s train gives credence to the view that the long trailer in a previous photo is indeed a Johannsen one. I had not seen that picture before. One helluvan outfit to handle but put in perpspective when you realise that the maximum speed they could muster with that low geared Diamond T was 22mph - with a following wind. As one of his drivers said ‘at that speed we didn’t worry too much about the fact that there were no brakes on the trailers’.
Secondly, what a ball’s up on the Jap wagon. With all those mirrors how the hell would the driver see a pedestrian stepping off the pavement just in front of him?
Oh, and by the way, wouldn’t that Texan tipper have legs wound down, at the rear as well, for stability? Don’t know myself, you need to move forward to get everything out so what would they do, keep dropping the body, upping the legs and move forward a bit? It’ a long time since I was on artic tippers and I do know that sometimes they scared me to death.
