Cant remember where but in a film/book someone asks for a hot drink in a US diner, but when served with it they complain. The owner snarls: "If ya want milknsugar, why dya ask for coffee?"

:laughing: :laughing: I come to it from a French perspective though, nobody would go into a routier and specify white or black coffee. Don’t remember seeing anyone here drinking the stuff either. :smiley:

If I have to have tea, it has to be black too, very refreshing on a hot day. Sugar, now that’s another thing altogether. :wink: :smiley:

I`ll normally have a cafe solo after a meal in France/Spain/Italy, but might well have an allonge or Americano mid afternoon or mid morning.
Au lait/con leche etc maybe with breakfast, but with a proper black one as a chaser.
Much as I like sweet desserts, I rarely have sugar in drinks. The exception being mint tea in Morocco. It might be heresy but I still prefer coffee there.
Filter coffee at home, or when self catering on the road. Strength adjusted to suit time of day/weather etc

I’m far from a coffee snob, I can enjoy instant with or sans milk. I’m also partial to flat white, which in Australia is brewed and made with milk, a bit like cappuccino without the chocolate and half cup of air.

I can drink strong tea with a drop of milk, no sugar, till it comes out of my ears, but coffee?

Do you what S.D.U. I have a slight feeling that that may not be the Nullarbor Roadhouse, as there appears to be an escarpment in the far distance. :confused: I could be wrong (I usually am) so I wonder if Dig can confirm where it is, as somewhere on the East Coast seems to ring a distant bell. :confused:

A little reminder about the roadhouse telegraph though. When I left Buntine to travel south I hitched a lift with 2 Victorians who didn’t want to drive road trains anymore and we stopped off at Dunmara for a beer. When standing at the bar we heard the waitress saying to 2 other drivers ‘I hear 3 of Buntine’s drivers left him this morning’.

The news travelled faster than we did. :laughing: 320 kms and a subject for discussion. :unamused:

Why I mentioned about that escarpment, which threw me a bit, was because I remember a hill somewhere near the old telegraph station near Eucla. I climbed up the hill to try out our new Sony video Cam to get a shot of the sunset and I could see a road train coming from the west. It must have been at least 5 miles away and eventually, I could hear the engine noise in the distance and started the recording. I could hear the driver going down through the gears and saw him switch his headlights on but just as he was about 100 yards away from me, the battery on the camcorder expired. :imp:

It’s changed a lot in the last 2~3 years. There were no fresh cakes and pastries, nor real milk or coffee machine when I was last there. There was a lot more scrub round the joint.
One thing that hasn’t changed, it’s still a bloody long was across the paddock.

Big horsepower and long legs, these blokes were swinging two at 140~150 kph all the way.
When I was working local in Perth, I was sent on a dog run to Wubin. I had a Kenworth, in hindsight possibly ex-Cleveland, that at 100 kph I set the cruise control. It shot up to 140 kph, I switched it off and reset it a couple of times with the same result. On reporting it to the owner, I was told “Yeah, it’s an old paddock runner.”
It was a get around for the limiter.
