I don’t remember them , and I don’t remember ever hearing the name Klemp Klamps either . Although I do recall several instances where they may well have come in handy .
Back in the days before many trailers were equipped with twist locks , the box , or Lancashire flat , was destined to remain wherever the crane or straddle loader chose to position it , and the onus fell upon the driver to secure it to the trailer by whatever means available … whether it be chain , rope , blue-tack , UHU , … or whatever .
But since Dean posted a clipping from a trade mag a while back showing an ad that was actually advertising the clamps at forty quid apiece , then it would appear unlikely that the said clamps are likely to be a figment of someone’s fevered imagination.
Interesting !
In fact , the search for photographic evidence of these legendary ISO clamps may quite well prove to be as intriguing as the search for elusive photographic proof of the existence of the mythical Guy big J thing with the you know what power unit poking out the back .

A McDonalds Scania artic parked between Sainsburys & McDonalds earlier today on
what was the site of the Wigan depot of Robert Baillie & Co Ltd from the late 1970s.

At the first glance of that ERF with the bent pipes on a special trailer, I thought it was a car carrier that had collapsed.

Which 300 bhp Gardner engine was fitted on this ERF serie C? 6 LYT? Thanks.
It’s the Gardner 8LXCT we had them at Stirlands very reliable they covered enormous mileage

You surprise me Gaz as I always heard , and had no reason to doubt, that the 8LXCT was a step too far for Gardners and I very definitely shied away from trying one although I did come close to acquiring one when I was offered the opportunity to buy out Howarth Bros of Ingleton and their flagship unit was an ERF 8LXCT ! I did run 5 8LXC engined units which gave faultless service but these were the last British built motors I bought as Scania had by this time become the backbone of the fleet and the last two LXC’s that I bought were a pair of Sed/Atks which I bought on some sort of nostalgic ego trip eh ! But I can say that these two units gave trouble free service on the fleet ! Cheers Dennis.

Stirlands ran a mixture of turbo Gardners both 6 and 8 form in ERF and Seddon Atkinson some ran 6 days a week virtually 24 hours a day and running at full weight most were replaced after 6 years due to the high mileage
I can only recall a couple of failures which were down to water pump issues causing engine seizure
Stirlands didn’t run any 8LXCs but they did operate 6LXCs which weren’t very reliable this nearly ended Stirlands long association with Gardner
Barry Gooch Stirlands fleet engineer was a staunch Gardner man but even he turned to ■■■■■■■ in the L10 guise as unladen weight was important the earlier ones leaked more oil than a Gardner!!!
And suffered premature head gasket problems
■■■■■■■ refused to pay towards any repair bills because in their own words the excessive mileage in such a short period of time couldn’t be warranted unbelievable
That’s when Stirlands returned to buying Gardners again
