is it legal to drive hgv with a passenger in the seat and a passenger on the bed at the same time
No
Each passenger must have their own seat / seat belt
its only a requirement to wear a seatbelt in a forward facing seat…hence ,no seat,no seatbelt, however…plod can still do you for being carried in a unsafe manner. according to some websites, its 3points for the driver,2 points for passenger, most likely £100 fine, with the added bonus for the driver also being prosecuted for “allowing” the passenger. Ive taken passengers in campervans for over 30 years by letting them sit on couches in the rear with no greif, but its all open to interpretation, and the gobstick that pulls you, though expect to get a charge or 3…easiest to just google uk seat belt law.
When Angus is making his TV programs and his pal is in the passenger seat of their shiny tractor unit next to Angus videoing the naughty drivers - where’s the TV cameraman sitting?
As far as I can see - on the bunk. What’s good for the goose …
I sometimes work with some of the Lancashire traffic Police. I asked this question and most said travelling on the bunk is ok. A couple said they’d consider it an offence.
But as said - a seat belt is only needed on a seat.
Obviously you can only wear a seat belt if one is fitted and there ain’t one fitted to the bunk so crack on.
On the last job I was on before I hung up my keys it was a double manned night trunk and if I wasn’t driving I mostly was on the bunk. Same girl my co driver when I was driving. On occasion both of us were seen by the police climbing from the bunk back into the passenger seat and it never caused us to get pulled.
