Is it realistic to work part time with or without working for agencies?
It’s possible I could keep going with my existing freelance work, and driving in quiet weeks/ months, and I’m wondering how viable that is.
Can’t see why not especially via agencies. You might find somewhere that will give you a zero hours contract direct too?

How sympathetic are agencies to drivers picking their hors?
In my current industry, if an agency calls and you say “I’m busy” twice, you typically won’t get called a third time.
There don’t seem to be nearly as many positive comments about trucking agencies as grumbles.
Agency i worked for recently were quite happy for me to be on a “flexi contract”, I’ve worked 3 days a week for last 2 years.
I would tell them when i was or wasnt available and would accomodate me to suit.
It helped that they were in Hermes Rugby hub and could fit me in at fairly short notice.
I did this when my children were young. I did have to work for companies that were always desperate for drivers such as Brake Brother, P&H and Bidvest but it suited me at the time and I was never short of work opportunities, even after the Xmas period
I’ve often worked weekends only and explained this to the agency at the start, and been with them 5 years now. Suits them to have someone extra for weekends and they understand I work when I can and I understand they won’t always call me.

Thanks all.
This is a little OT, but when you “sign up” to an agency, what are you signing up to? Are you self employed, are you contracted to the agency or their customer? Are there any benefits like paid holiday / sick leave / NI / pension contributions? (I’m guessing not. ) Who’s insurance are you covered by?
